WeTV Launch Zoom

I’ve been watching WeTV for a few months already, and did not realize that it has not yet officially launched.

Last week, they officially launched the service, and it was attended by celebrities and media through a Zoom meeting 🙂 I was there, too.

Only P59/month!

I posted about it on Facebook and I didn’t realize that so many of my friends were already hooked on WeTV! Many of them have been watching their dramas through other means, but WeTV being only P59/month is so affordable that many of them have switched to this legitimate source of tv dramas instead. The fee is slightly cheaper if you buy it per quarter (P159) or for 1 year (P599).

I once tried watching a series on one of the free online streaming sites and I gave up after a few eps. First of all, I don’t particularly enjoy watching TV shows on my phone. I only do that when I want to stay in the air-conditioned room that doesn’t have any TV. Second, the ads were placed awkwardly, and I always end up doing wrong clicks. Third, I had to download some embedded player that I was worried probably had a virus or something. Forwarding or rewinding was also not very smooth.

I think most people are willing to pay a minimal and reasonable fee to watch shows more conveniently and legitimately.

Available on Android TV

While WeTV is primarily available through their mobile app on Google Play or Apple Store, they also have an Android TV app.

When I first heard about WeTV through my iflix connections, the first thing I did was check if they had an Android TV app, and thank goodness, they do! We only have 1 Android TV so it’s the only TV where I can watch WeTV. The older smart TV in my bedroom only has Netflix and YouTube and doesn’t have any way for me to add the WeTV app, so I think I eventually have to get an Android TV stick or box for it so I can watch WeTV in my bedroom. Seriously, watching TV in bed is so much more comfortable than on an antique wooden sala set (it’s back breaking) ?

WeTV Android App

I tried Viu before, but their TV app doesn’t work on our Sharp Android TV – they only have a few brands and models where their app works (selected Apple, Samsung, LG TVs only). Viu is also more expensive. I had to hook up my laptop to the TV via HDMI cable and while that’s how I did it in the old days before smart TVs were common, it’s 2020 and it’s not my preferred method anymore. I like the convenience of a TV app.

I don’t like screen mirroring my phone to the TV, it’s just not the same and it’s blurry. Something I can watch on the TV sort of natively would be the most ideal situation, so WeTV having a working TV app is great!

Shows I’ve Watched on WeTV

Anyway, WeTV is turning out to be really “sulit” for me. It has A LOT of TV series. Many of these are Mainland Chinese dramas, but they have a growing list of Korean dramas as well. They are also adding more regional fare like Thai dramas, as well as local Philippine shows.

Here are some shows I’ve watched on WeTV. These are not available on Netflix, so WeTV is “faster” in terms of content 🙂

I am currently watching the K-drama Tale of the Nine Tailed on WeTV – it is about a nine-tailed fox spirit who fell in love with a human woman 600 years ago, but due to an evil demon spirit, the woman died. He has waited for her to reincarnate for 600 years. She has reincarnated, but the evil demon spirit is also back and wants to destroy them… It stars Lee Dong Wook (Goblin’s friend in Goblin). WeTV gets the new episodes as soon as it finishes airing in Korea! Not only that, WeTV also has exclusive clips and other extras for the show.

I already finished Dating in the Kitchen, a C-drama that I can recommend for those who like lighthearted & fun rom-com TV series. It is on par with regular modern-day k-dramas in terms of quality. It is about this aspiring chef who works in the kitchen of a hotel. She is young and new, so she is only given chores like peeling potatoes and is not allowed to cook for guests. One day, a rich businessman who plans on buying the hotel accidentally eats food she cooked and it’s the only dish that passes his very meticulous gourmet standards while all the other dishes from more experienced chefs failed. I enjoyed this series, especially because of all the food showed. However, the series seemed to drag in the last few episodes. I feel like this could have finished in 16 episodes, but they had to drag it out to 24 eps. Other than that, I enjoyed this.

Other shows on WeTV that my friends have recommended to me are Flower of Evil and My Girlfriend is an Alien. I just started My Girlfriend is an Alien and it’s hilarious! It’s about this female alien who’s obsessed with men’s abs ??? Special effects are not as good as Hollywood’s, but so far, the show has been extremely funny.

The WeTV Android TV App

The WeTV Android TV app is very simple, barebones almost. It needs improvement to make it look more polished. But it does what it needs to do.

WeTV Android App 2

WeTV Android App 3

WeTV Android App 4

It takes some effort to look for series you want to watch because only a few shows are shown in their Spotlight area. I suggest going to “Drama” and then choosing “All”:

WeTV Drama All Screen Cap
Screen cap from browser because I don’t know how to do this on the TV app

In terms of viewing, the shows are very clear, so it can stream in HD with no issues that I’ve noticed.

WeTV Launch Zoom Meeting

Among the first slew of titles launching under WeTV Originals are:

  • Section St. Valentine: The Disappearance of Divine – A dark teen drama about senior high school students of Section St. Valentine, all of whom resume classes via Zoom except for “IT” girl in school, Divine Concepcion. Her absence triggers an online investigation to solve the mystery behind her disappearance. (Premiering January 2021)
  • B&B: The Story of Battle of Brody & BrandyThis modern day romantic comedy starring Iza Calzado and Ian Veneracion. Brody is a charming guest staying at Brandy’s B & B. • The Anatomy of Loneliness – A simple guy, Mamon, has one dream – to win the heart of his muse, Nene. The series tells the story about two lonely individuals who unexpectedly find real connection amidst the very impersonal platform of social media.

I don’t know if it’s just me, but I find that I have been gravitating more towards Asian TV fare this year. I used to watch Western TV shows all the time but they don’t make me feel happy, warm & fuzzy the way these Asian dramas I watch do.

I also find that the Asian shows are easier for me to watch. They tend to promote family values and don’t try to keep pushing uncomfortable situations on their audience. I can safely watch my k-dramas and c-dramas without feeling like I need to skip scenes or cover anybody’s eyes or feel like I have to be on my guard about the show trying to influence the way I think about certain issues. This is something that has turned me off many Western shows that I used to watch. All I want is to have something entertaining to watch while I relax after a tiring day and WeTV has a lot of that on offer 🙂 I find myself excited for night time because it’s time to watch the next episodes!

Promise, sulit na sulit ko yung P59!!! Imagine, 2-5 episodes per night for 30 days 😀 Bawing bawi na yung P59 hahaha.

If you love Asian dramas too, check out WeTV, I’m sure you’ll get the most out of it like I do!
