Nanyang’s Yuan Yang – Half Coffee, Half Tea

So it’s no secret that coffee keeps me going.

But then I also love tea.

So there is one drink that I absolutely MUST-HAVE when I pass by any Nanyang branch (and I need a coffee break) – and that’s their Yuan Yang!

Yuan Yang is half-coffee, half-tea, made in Singaporean fashion with the socks!

Met up with a friend at the BGC / Bonifacio High Street branch of Nanyang. This one is inside BreadTalk.

It’s so nice to go out of the house for a change. There’s fresh air and good food.

Like I said, I got the Yuan Yang (P100) and it’s a definite pick-me-up! The coffee is made the traditional way, using socks and “pulling” it. And the strong, smooth tea is made in the same way.

Here’s the video:

So it’s got strong coffee, strong tea, evaporated milk and sugar. I can taste the coffee, as well as the tea. The coffee is really good – flavorful but not bitter nor burnt – it’s perfect. It’s really my favorite drink in all of Nanyang’s line up.

I also got the Laksa (P268) – another favorite at Nanyang! I love the creamy soup that isn’t too spicy. Not a fan of the noodles, but the soup though! I could drink the Laksa soup all day, every day!

Laksa with Prawns

For the main meal, I ordered the Hainanese Fried Chicken Rice (P268). This meal has the Chicken Rice, Fried Chicken Cutlet, Soy Sauce & Garlic Bok Choy, the 3 sauces (ginger, hoisin and chili sauces) as well as soup. I didn’t need to order the Laksa, I just wanted to because I always get Laksa at Nanyang 😀

What I noticed was that the Bok Choy was done very well! As someone who cooks this dish a lot at home because it’s a basic Chinese home cooking vegetable dish, I would like to recognize Nanyang BGC for getting this right 🙂 The bok choy was not overcooked, and the sauce was just right and garlicky, with some strips of Chinese pork sausage, I think. It’s a very simple dish but many people tend to overcook the veg.

Best Value Coffee for P100!

For P100, the Yuan Yang at Nanyang is the best value coffee for me!

You’ve got legit Singaporean coffee and Singaporean tea made personally by their barista, with all the coffee pulling skillz and everything! I mean, that’s much more exciting than a brew that is just pulled out of an expresso machine (my other favorite latte from another café costs P150).

Feel free to add more sugar if you want to.

But one can’t go to Nanyang and not order their Kaya Toast (P70), which are traditionally dipped in soft-boiled eggs flavored with a bit of soy sauce (some people also like to add some chili sauce).
