Laneige Water Bank Moisture Kit & Sleeping Mask Review – I’ve Had Better

Laneige Water Bank Travel Set

I bought this Laneige Water Bank Moisture Kit Travel Set two months ago on my trip to Hong Kong. It’s all on my Where to Buy Cheap Beauty Products in Hong Kong (Branded) + Shopping Tips post.

It was HK$25 at Bonjour. It is my first try of the Laneige brand. I was hesitant about blindly jumping into buying the full size products, and I am glad that I only purchased the travel size.

Unfortunately, I bought a full size of the Laneige Water Bank Sleeping Mask so I’ll just try to use that up somehow. I bought it for HK $95, also at Bonjour.

I got them at a bargain — their official prices are much, much higher.

All of them have 2021 Best Before dates.

LANEIGE WATER BANK SET REVIEW

The set contains three products:

  • Moisture Essence
  • Moisture Cream
  • Eye Gel

USAGE

I used the Laneige Water Bank Moisture Kit set consistently for 2 weeks straight, morning and night. And then for the past few nights, I started using the Laneige Water Bank Sleeping Mask on top of them before bed.

I apply 2-3 pumps of the Moisture Essence first all over my clean face, then a pea-sized amount of the Moisture Cream. After that, I apply a tiny gob of the Eye Gel around my eye area.

As for the Sleeping Mask, I only use it at night and apply a thin layer on top of everything.

In the morning, I wash everything off my face and then re-apply the Laneige Water Bank set again for the day.

Here are what the products look like:

Laneige Water Bank Products

Laneige Water Bank Moisture Essence

Laneige Water Bank Moisture Cream

Laneige Water Bank Eye Gel

Laneige Water Bank Sleeping Mask

The products have a light, floral scent that I don’t mind.

RESULTS

I had high expectations for these products, considering how much they were raved about a few years ago.

My skin is normally not dry – I can go a few days without applying any sort of moisturizer and my skin would be fine. However, it gets dry quickly when in an arid environment (like a few days of consistent air-conditioning 24/7), or, when using harsh cleansers. But, my skin also tends to get oily, especially at the end of the day.

Laneige Water Bank Travel Set Review

The Laneige Water Bank set did moisturize my face, but it just didn’t work for me as well as my other moisturizers do. When I wake up in the morning, my skin doesn’t look as plump, hydrated, refreshed and radiant the way my other moisturizers make it. My skin just looks… normal.

I use even more of the Laneige than I do of my other moisturizers! I mean, I am layering on 3 products – essence, cream and eye gel. With my other products – I just use 2 (essence & cream), sometimes just cream.

I’ve been using the set for almost 2 weeks – they are almost used up, but I just don’t want to use them anymore and reach for my other moisturizers instead. Sorry, I’m just not happy with these.

Laneige Water Bank Sleeping Mask Review

Ok, I liked this better than the Travel Set. I can see why this is the best-selling Laneige product – I noticed better moisturization of my skin with the sleeping mask vs. no mask and just the 3 products from the set.

However, I think to make the most out of the sleeping mask, the underlying products must also work well. As a sleeping mask, it only acts as the final layer to moisturizing my skin — if the products underneath don’t perform well, the sleeping mask can’t do miracles.

I didn’t know how much I was supposed to use the sleeping mask – do I use it every night? Every few days? I tried using it for two nights straight and I ended up with a cystic pimple. I notice this happen to me before when using other sleeping masks, which is why I make sure to wash off the sleeping mask in the morning (I use Clinique Liquid Facial Soap – I don’t like it but I’m just trying to use it up). If I don’t wash the sleeping masks off, I usually end up with cystic pimples. But with this product, I still got cystic pimples even if I washed it off after I wake up.

SUMMARY

I really wanted to like the Laneige products but I just couldn’t. They just don’t hydrate my skin as well as my Etude House Collagen Moistfull Emulsion and Cream combo, nor my Clinique Moisture Surge, nor my Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion + Tony Moly Black Tea London Classic Emulsion combo. I’ll just use up whatever Laneige product is left and I am so relieved to be going back to my regular moisturizers soon!

Do they work? Yes. They do moisturize my skin – but just not as effectively as my other moisturizers. I have moisturizers that work better on my skin that cost much less.

As for the Laneige Water Bank Sleeping Mask, I will try using it on top of my regular moisturizers to see if it will work better. The downside really is getting pimples after using it, so I guess I’ll space out using it to like, just once a week.

UPDATE:

I’ve been told that this is Laneige’s basic line, and that Laneige has the Perfect Renew line that would be more in suited for my skin needs. Will keep an eye out for it 🙂
