Barat Ako’s Pocket Wifi Buying Guide 2015

Spread the Love!

Barat Ako's Pocket Wifi Buying Guide 2015The prices of pocket wifi offers from Smart, Globe and Sun have dropped to the lowest I’ve seen them.

Which pocket wifi offer should you get?

There used to be just ordinary pocket wifi, and LTE-capable pocket wifi. Now the ads are screaming 4G pocket wifi, too. It can be very confusing, especially if you’re not really a tech person. Just what are they exactly and which one should you pick?

If you have no idea what you’re doing, I hope this will at least give you some idea of what to look for. A few weeks ago, I was standing in line behind this 30-ish couple with their three elementary-age kids at a Smart center cashier. They were looking to buy a pocket wifi and had NO IDEA what they were buying. They were looking at the pocket wifi box and turning it every which way. Wife says, let’s buy this because it says it has more MBs, thinking that meant it was faster. Husband says, are you sure? what about this one, it looks nice. And on and on they argued about which one to get – yet they didn’t even have a clue about pocket wifis. I was sorely tempted to offer my help, except that I sensed that the wife was a know-it-all (feeling magaling) type. So I just minded my own business and left them alone.

First of all, it’s not about MBs.

1. Postpaid or Prepaid?

Your first decision is – postpaid or prepaid? And for your first purchase, and if you don’t know what you’re doing, I’m adamant that you get a prepaid pocket wifi or something with no lock-in period. Why? It’s less commitment and less lugi if you’re not satisfied with the service. If you try it out and are happy with the service, well and good. If you try it and you’re not happy with the service, you can stop right there and switch to another network. Just take your pocket wifi to Greenhills, and for a few hundred pesos, you can get your pocket wifi unlocked so it can use another network’s SIM. For the love of all that’s holy, do not lock yourself into a 12 or 24-month contract. So many people have been burned by that, still being forced to pay their monthly bill even when they are not happy with the internet that they’re getting. Avoid this. Just scroll through the comments on your telco’s Facebook page to get an idea of the kind of rage you might find yourself feeling in the future.

2. 4G or LTE?

When you buy a pocket wifi, it’s important that you get the model number. It’s going to be something like Huawei e5372 or Alcatel Y800 or ZTE MF93D, etc… It’s usually written on a sticker on the side of the box. If you have the time – do a bit of research on the model – what’s the user feedback? Does it overheat? Does it “hang”? Are there other technical glitches? Just google it and read the various local message boards.

More importantly – what is the max speed of the pocket wifi? For LTE, that’s easy. If it’s an LTE pocket wifi, it will say LTE on the box. LTE means it should be capable of up to 42 Mbps speed.

If the pocket wifi box doesn’t say LTE, it’s trickier. There are some older pocket wifis that can only go as fast as 7.2 Mbps, and there are other non-LTE pocket wifis that can go as fast as 21 Mbps. Take note – Mbps, not MBs. Those are two different things.

Mbps is Megabits per second – this is the measurement of data transfer speed.

MBs are megabytes – how much data you transfer; this is what telcos mean on promos where they say you get X MB or GB of data

A quick and simple analogy would be: Let’s imagine your connection to your telco’s mobile internet is a highway –

Mbps is like how fast your cars are running on that highway

MBs or GBs are like the amount of cars running on that highway

So if the telco says promo X gives you 1000MB of data (non-LTE) and they say that their network can provide speeds up to 21Mbps, and you are using a pocket wifi with max speed of 12Mbps – the analogy is:

Only a maximum of 1,000 cars (MBs) can run on that highway, at a maximum speed of 12kph (Mbps).

It doesn’t mean that your cars are guaranteed to run at 12kph. It’s usually slower. By a lot.

It’s a bit more complicated than that but the analogy makes it easier for most non-techie people to understand.

If budget is a concern, a 7.2 Mbps pocket wifi is okay if you can buy it significantly cheaper. Most mobile internet speed tests I’ve done usually only show an average speed of 0.5-5 Mbps, anyway, well below the 7.2Mbps max speed of the pocket wifi. That’s a Smart/Sun or Globe problem and not your pocket wifi’s fault.

Otherwise, get the pocket wifi with the higher Mbps (faster data transfer speed).

The LTE pocket wifi is, of course, the best choice – but it’s also the most expensive one at P4,888 for Smart Bro Prepaid, and P4,995 for Globe Tattoo Prepaid. And to fully maximize your gadget, you must use it in an area that has good LTE coverage.

If your area doesn’t have LTE coverage yet, you can still buy the LTE pocket wifi to be “future-proof”. This means, that when your area finally gets LTE coverage, you don’t have to buy a new pocket wifi – you can keep using your pocket wifi. Technically, you should be able to use your LTE pocket wifi even when you’re out of LTE coverage, it will just switch to using 4G or 3G instead. However, when we tested our LTE SIM and LTE gadget in a non-LTE covered area, I found the internet speed to be really slow. Slower than my regular 4G. So it’s up to you to decide which one you’ll get. My advice is to test, test, test as much as you can by borrowing other people’s pocket wifis, and ask other people (officemates, neighbors) who have pocket wifis what their experiences are.

If it were me, I would buy the 4G pocket wifi. I’ve been waiting since 2013 to get LTE coverage in our part of Manila – doesn’t look like it’s going to happen anytime soon. It’s also cheaper, and it can already reach 21 Mbps. That’s 7x faster than my home DSL speed. Even if I don’t get blazing fast LTE speeds, I won’t be complaining if my 4G pocket wifi actually does reach 21 Mbps. Heck, even 12 Mbps is something I’d be happy about.

Also, by the time that LTE coverage becomes more widespread, LTE pocket wifi prices should be dropping as well, making it easier to buy a newer, better LTE pocket wifi when the time comes.

3. How many devices can be connected? Battery life?

Some older models can only connect a max of 5 devices. Newer models can connect up to 10. Consider this when choosing a pocket wifi – double-check how many devices can be connected at the same time, and how many devices you plan to use with it. I think it’s always better to get the one that can connect more devices, right?

Battery life is usually at 5-6 hours – no big difference between brands.

These are the non-LTE pocket wifis currently offered by the telcos for prepaid:

I find the ones sold by the telcos to be cheaper than the non-telco branded ones, but it’s your personal decision if you prefer to buy the usually more expensive non-telco provided pocket wifis. The reasons people go that route is because there are more choices, better specs, features & accessories, no restrictions (open line), and more models to choose from when buying outside the telcos.

Smart’s 4G Prepaid Pocket Wifi is P1,495.00 (they claim a max speed of 12 Mbps, but check the specs anyway, it could be higher; connects up to 10 devices)

Sun Cellular’s Prepaid Pocket Wifi is P1,395.00 (if I’m not mistaken, it has a max speed of only 7.2 Mbps; connects up to 10 devices)

Globe Tattoo’s Prepaid 4G Mobile Wifi is P1,495.00 (max speed of 12 Mbps; connects up to 10 devices)

  1. Great advice here! Im using a non telco pocket wifi from tp link. Its has only 3g connectivity but it serves it purpose well, reaching speeds of roughly 2-12 MBps with a max speed of 21Mbps. By the way im on a sim only Smart Data plan: LTE 999 without contract so i can cut anytime i want.

    • Hi, SC! That’s great! It’s the first time I’ve heard of someone who is on an LTE plan who’s not using an LTE modem, but is still reaching high speeds.

Only vary s signal ng telcos? Or 7mbps ung signal traffic na kaya nya? Newbie po. Ty much

      • Great day. Im on smart LTE 999 plan just last Monday.I was surprised with the connection after 5 days I cant conect. So I checked the the smart dashboard and found out that my GB or something I used up and to reconnect I need to load on line.So. I did have 99 for 3 days. This riduculous! As a first time user I am confused about the usage of my plan. Whenever I used the connection I go on line chat in the messenger that sometimes last one hour and you tube.Help me understand why i cant connect. Is there a limit of usage? Your anwer will be appreciated Than you and God bless.

        • Hi BH, yes, there’s a limit. It’s called a data cap. I don’t think your lte plan is unlimited because they don’t offer unlimited plans anymore.

I don’t know how many GBs your plan gives you but you most likely used it up. Streaming services like Youtube use a lot of data, especially if you’re watching in high quality video.

    • Hi Ma’am. How about in area somewhere in Laguna Cabuyao Pula. What networks is best for wifi connecitons..TY

  2. thanks for your tips.. A Great help for me..I am planning to buy a pocket wifi and I think i have to choose for smart or globe 🙂

      • Hi gudmorning. Ask ko lang. Im planning to get one its either smart & globe, kung halimbawa buy ako smart pocket wifi at may gusto maki connect sakin pra magka internet din cya at globe ang sim nya, pwede ba connect ang globe nya sa smart ko na pocket wifi? Tnx!?

        • Yes, puwede 🙂 It doesn’t matter kung globe or smart yung sim ng friend mo. Walang kinalaman yung sim sa pag connect sa wifi. As long as wifi capable yung gadget ng friend mo and has the correct settings, password, etc… it should be able to connect to your pocket wifi.

  3. Great article. Short, non biased and very informative. Im planning to get the sun pocket wifi with the xiaomi mi pad as a back up to my globe dsl. Any idea on the sun wifi performance?

    • Hi, Diego!

I’ve been getting mixed feedback about Sun’s pocket wifi plan. I have two friends who love it and swear that they can’t live without it – they are on the internet 24/7 (mostly social media & Viber) and say that it’s fast (QC & Manila), and then I know another person who had trouble with Sun (Makati area) with Viber unable to send or receive images.

What they were all happy about was the “unlimitedness” of the Sun broadband plan. I think they stopped offering the unli plans already though. But anyway, try thinking about where you will be using your pocket wifi and check if Sun’s broadband signal is good there 🙂 Or do a trial run using prepaid first, or get a plan with no lock-in period (or very short lock-in period). But generally, good feedback naman for Sun, just don’t have very high expectations for speed and it’s generally okay.

      • hello and good day. thank you for the reply. yup sadly the unlimited internet sun promo was phased out. I was at sun galeria last week. if ever il use it around the area of san juan, ortigas, pasig, mandaluyong, bgc and taguig. I think il get the wi fi unlock version from non Telco sellers and get the sim only. go for the sun first and then if not satisfied il go for smart. thank you for the great advice.

I know its a long shot, if ever you bump in on a for sale brand new Microsoft surface pro 3 that is affordable, just let me know. ive searched all the websites olx lazada and its very expensive.

im a freelance cpa who does leg works on the day and office work at night.

  4. Hi there. Which do you prefer to use? We’re planning to buy one but we don’t know what brand we will choose. Thank you.

    • Hi Chowder, in my experience, Smart’s internet is faster and generally more reliable, but right now, expensive. But each of them have their own pros & cons. Sometimes nagloloko ang Smart, sometimes nagloloko ang Globe.

I am using Globe prepaid for my pocket wifi because it’s cheap (P70 for 1GB for 1 week), but it can be super slow sometimes. As in. Even while at the BGC area, I was trying to post an Instagram pic, and it took, no joke, 5 minutes to upload. Minsan naman, acceptable ang speed.

There are some places where Smart has no signal – like S&R Shaw and Starbucks Shaw. Weird nga bakit walang signal doon.

Sun I think is just the same as Smart. Sister companies sila and I think they share a lot of equipment/towers, so if may problem ang Smart, usually may problem din ang Sun.

Last Wednesday, something went wrong with PLDT’s internet, all torrents were blocked that day. I’m assuming Smart had the same problem since it is using PLDT’s network. Good thing I had my Globe – torrents were not blocked on Globe – mabagal pero at least meron.

It’s really up to you and what you are willing to pay and what you are willing to settle for. I was recently interested in getting the Sun internet non-stop surf plan na 350/month but got turned off because the staff couldn’t answer my basic questions about it – basically I wanted to know if P350/month, hanggang P350 lang talaga and it will not allow me to accidentally surf outside the plan. And also what about Viber, Whatsapp, Skype – if I only use the text messaging functions and not voip or video calling? Is it still still considered outside the nonstop surf plan?

This is why I’m still using prepaid for my mobile internet — I always leave my prepaid with zero balance or only P1.00. Walang “accidentally” makakain na load.

Anyway, just bear in mind you have to be flexible and don’t assume that any network will work great all the time. I also wrote a post about why it’s advisable to get an unlocked pocket wifi: http://www.karenmnl.com/its-a-good-time-to-buy-unlocked-pocket-wifis/

Good luck and hope you make a good choice based on your needs.

  5. Hi Barat Queen! Plan namin bumili ng pocket wifi for our 3-day stay sa Guimaras. Nabanggit mo na in some places, walang LTE coverage available kaya recommended yung non-LTE devices. I was wondering if you or someone you know had been there?

Also, sa SM kami bibili. Paano ba yun? As in didiretso kami sa Smart/Sun/Globe outlet? Paano lo-load-an, prepaid sana kukunin namin.

    Haha andaming tanong! 😀

    • Hi Clove! Thanks for visiting.

Sorry, I have not been to Guimaras. Try to ask yung resort or hotel where you will stay kung alin yung may malakas na signal sa kanila and if meron ng LTE 🙂

Wala naman problema if you get the LTE pocket wifi – it will still work even without LTE signal, it will just use the 3G signal instead. Mas mahal lang ang LTE pocket wifi but mas future-proof. If you don’t want to spend too much, the non-LTE pocket wifi is cheaper.

Once you have decided on which telco to use, you can just go to their center at SM malls and buy the prepaid pocket wifi. May kasama na syang SIM as far as I know. But magbaon ng pasensya. Usually mahaba pila sa mga centers, and sometimes out of stock.

For loading, ang ginagawa ko old style pa – tanggal SIM, lipat sa phone, register using phone, then balik yung SIM sa pocket wifi 🙂 hahaha. I think you can do it online, too.. pero sigurista kasi ako, gusto ko nakikita yung message na pumasok na yung load & na register na 😀 If you have an old, old Nokia phone na buhay pa, it’s good to use for this purpose . And also para meron kang back-up phone na mahaba ang battery life.

Hope you have a nice vacation 🙂

  6. Hi! Many thanks for this article. Very informative and straightforward.

May I ask your help for recommendation on what to get if one is working from home? I would be moving in a dormitory soon along Estrella, Makati, and I’m hoping to have a stable internet connection because there are times when I need to download and send huge files. The dorm offers WIFI connection but since I’m sharing with other tenants, I don’t think it would be enough or consistent.

Really hoping to hear your thoughts 🙂 thanks again!

    • Hi Grazelle! Thanks for reading! You have to check which telco signal is strongest and provides fastest internet in your dorm. Can you borrow some of your neighbors’ pocket wifis to test?

But I suggest getting an unlocked pocket wifi. It’s easier to switch SIM cards. There is no such thing as stable mobile internet in the Philippines yet hahha 😀 I try to maintain mobile internet connections to both Smart & Globe. Mura lang ang SIM, P40 lang. It’s cheap to have a back-up. Sometimes nagloloko ang Smart/Sun, I switch to Globe SIM and register to some promo. Pag nagloloko ang Globe, I switch to Smart SIM. Ganyan lang. This way, you will have some internet, at least, when you need it.

Try to have a Smart Money account & a GCash account so you can load your SIMs yourself (no need to go out to buy load every time). You can just keep P500-P1,000 in each account, depending on how much load you use up. Just load enough to your SIM for whatever promo you are registering to so you don’t have to worry about losing load by accident. Smart Money & GCash account money do not expire, for Smart Money, I think dapat huwag lang ma-dormant for 6 months.

Also keep in mind that in that dorm, there may be many of you using pocket wifis. Minsan bumabagal. Also, it’s best if you put your pocket wifi near a window and not in the middle of the building where mahina ang mobile internet signal.

      Hope that helps 🙂

Thanks!

        • Hello Kaven,

Sorry, di ko rin alam. You can ask Sun Cellular on Twitter or on their FB page.

          or –

Daan ka lang sa Sun shop tapos ask if you can see the pocket wifi, kahit box lang kung wala silang model unit. Go there pag di peak hours para di sila busy, mas maaasikaso ka. Doon sa box usually makikita mo yung model number, usually nasa sticker. If you think you will forget what you see, ask if you can take a picture. Tapos google mo nalang.

Minsan, swerte medyo may alam yung makakausap mo sa Sun Shop, but based on my experience, mas alam ko pa yung producto nila kesa sa staff ng Sun Shop – they don’t know anything technical about their products, minsan nambobola pa pero mali-mali naman sinasabi. That’s why I am suggesting ikaw nalang mismo tumingin sa box for the model number.

About the Xiaomi Mi Pad plan, I don’t know if it includes a pocket wifi. I just checked Sun’s website, wala atang kasamang pocket wifi. Baka you need to buy that separately.

However, I think all the pocket wifis being sold now are already HSPA+ capable, just not all of them are LTE-capable. But the max speed you will get from Sun’s internet is only 7.2 Mbps http://suncellular.com.ph/broadband/plans-and-devices/non-stop-surf-plan-faq

  7. Hello Maam! I recently transferred to a dorm that doesn’t allow a DSL connection so I am currently considering buying a pocket wifi for my internet. Thank you for writing a very informative article. But even though after reading such a straightforward article, I still feel like i have too many choices and I’m still not that confident whether I can make such a decision. So can I just ask what pocket wifi can you recommend for me? The dorm is located near UST (Tolentino St.) I just plan on using it for social media and an online game I play on my phone (which requires a decent enough internet connection to be played properly) . I only have 2 devices (both are phones).

I’m currently eyeing Cherry Mobile’s Ultra-on-the-go but i have no idea if it’s worth it or not. I’m hoping you could shed some light on the matter. Thank you very much! More power!

    • Hi Gil,

Thank you for your comment! My recommendation is to get an unlocked pocket wifi, or buy a telco pocket wifi and have it unlocked. Please read my reply to Grazelle above 🙂

Kasi we only have 2-3 choices when it comes to mobile internet, and we all know they are not 100% good all the time. Depending on your location, the price of a promo, signal strength, network speed, etc.. sometimes you have to switch networks, so it’s best to be flexible.

This way, you can also test a SIM from Globe, Smart & Sun to check which works best in your area. You can just subscribe for a 1 day promo from each telco and see which is the best for you.

I have not used the Cherry Ultra On the Go, but google some reviews on it and read the comments before deciding. My personal opinion lang is to go for the tried & tested Huawei brand – it will be easier to buy an extra battery for it, and it will be easier to sell it if you want to upgrade or change pocket wifi.

    • You can bring your pocket wifi to Greenhills or other tiangge-type places where they sell cellphones & accessories. There will be people there who will offer unlocking services.

Be prepared to haggle. Depending on your pocket wifi model, the unlocking should only be around P200-400. Kung magaling ka tumawad baka kaya ng P100 🙂

      • Even the fuktwat smart telecom did that too. They shamelessly put 4g on the boxes but when you configure the device it actually shows that it’s only a 3g. When confronted with their false ads they justify it as hspa+, 3.75g, 3.5g or what ever excuse they could think of. Fuking blatant liars.

    • Hi, Mia! Unfortunately, almost all of the mobile internet offers now have FUPs (for the unli offers, which are getting harder and harder to find). I think Globe’s is 800mb per day. Sa Smart, people have been saying that they haven’t experienced any data cap so far… but some have been complaining lately about slower internet (for the unli users).

There are no FUPs for volume-based mobile internet.

  8. OH MY GOSH! thanx a lot for clearing this stuff in my hay wire brain. im no techy by any means and im dying to purchase one pocket wifi but i just don’t know what thing to buy.. thank you so much.

ummmm now if I may ask you another favor, dear… ummmm if you can kindly make a summary or even just compare a few of the non-telcos pocket wifi, like the huawei (ive been hearing a lot of this huwawei thingy lately) or other stuff and.. and WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND.

im placing my full trust on you, girl, because you have captured and cleared my boggling mind on this pocket wifi thing. thank you

    • Hi yittleby, there are a lot of models available and I don’t have the time to research them all 🙁

You can just stick with what’s available locally, or buy the same models as the ones being used by the telcos. Their functions are pretty much the same, just pick the newer models (get the model number and google it).

The more expensive Huawei pocket wifis have other features like you can attach an external antenna (so it can get better signal), etc… but for general use and if you don’t need anything special, just stick with the same models that the telcos are selling. I think right now Smart is selling the Huawei 5377 model.

  9. Very helpful and informative review/guide for a non-techie law student like me. I am interested in getting the unlocked version (or atleast have it unlocked) of pocket wifi like what you’ve suggested to most of your readers. 🙂

    • Hello jhodysantos11,

Thanks for visiting the site 🙂 Yes, you need to buy load. You need a SIM card to put inside, parang cellphone lang talaga, except instead of calls & texts, you register to mobile internet offers. You need to put load into the SIM card para magamit mo, you can register to different offers, just like a cellphone.

I don’t know about your pocket wifi model, but generally, ililipat mo yung SIM card ng pocket wifi to a cellphone so you can register to promos. After mag register and naka promo ka na, ibabalik mo yung sim card sa pocket wifi. There are other ways pero doon ka muna sa tried & tested way pag di mo pa kabisado kung paano gumamit.

      Hope that helps 🙂

  10. Hi, I plan to buy a Globe Tatoo LTE pocket wifi prepaid for my father but I’m not to sure if in Marikina (Brgy. Concepcion near Sumulong Hwy is LTE ready. I’m here in Canada so I’m not aware of our signals or latest craze down there. I like your forum and helps a lot specially for us here abroad. Thank you and more power. God Bless!

  11. Thanks for sharing your opinion and ideas with regards to pocket wifi. This helped me a lot since I have no idea about this gadget. I’m planning to buy soon for my daughter who’s going into college this August. Now I know what to check, what specs would my daughter need and where to go. God bless! 🙂

Thank you pooo

    • Hello jen 🙂 Thanks for your comment!

Before we start thinking that your unlocked pocket wifi is defective, have you tried to check the settings? Try mo google How to set up Huawei e5330 🙂

If nagawa mo na lahat tapos ganun pa din, try calling Huawei for tech support, hopefully your unit is within warranty 🙂

Also, baka postpaid yung sa pinsan mo. Mas priority ang postpaid and they get faster internet vs prepaid (based on feedback from other people and my personal experience).

  13. My Globe pocket wifi (Huawei 5330) only upload and no download anymore

Connection is good. It worked well for 2 weeks. Now sometimes some minutes working well and then finish again.
Yesterday I reload for 499p but still nothing.

Went to Globe service center Gmall Davao but
they simply say: you get connection.
Further service is zero from their side to get me online on internet.

I think about to buy Smart pocket wifi and use that one.

Or do someone have other idea what to do?

    Regards,
    André

    • Hi Andre, thank you for taking the time to comment. Have you checked if you have used up all your data/credits? Did you register to GoSurf 499? Also, did you check the Globe signal on your pocket wifi? Maybe the signal was poor, and that’s why there’s a problem.

Anyway, none of these services are really 100% reliable. It’s best to have back-ups. If the Smart signal in your area is good, maybe you should try it. A SIM card is only P40. You can just register to a one day Big Bytes offer and test it out.

      http://www.karenmnl.com/smart-big-bytes-quick-review-more-mbs-for-less/

You can re-use your Globe pocket wifi by having it unlocked. I’m sure there are unlocking services in Davao. After unlocking, you just need to configure the settings so that it will work with Smart.

      http://www.karenmnl.com/its-a-good-time-to-buy-unlocked-pocket-wifis/

      Good luck! 🙂

      • Dear Barat Queen,

        Thanks for your reply.
I reloaded amd I’m registered for 3.1 Gb of mobile data..
        Signal is good.

I tried it out by my friend who have postpaid Globe pocket wifi, when using his everything is okay but then we tried out my pockey wifi we got no internet.

Also my Globe supersurf on phone is working perfect so it is certainly not the signal.

Maybe better for me to buy a new Smart pocket wifi bcs this one is probably broken.
It’s very hard for me to have no internet on my laptop. This phone is just a substitute.

Thanks in advance again for answer.

        André

  14. I wish I read this article first. I’ve no experience with pocket Wi-Fis so I thought I’d be okay with Smart 4G. Shet ang bagal niya dito. May LTE signal naman but I figured since kaya naman ng 12mbps ng 4G mabilis na dapat yun.

    flkasflkjaslkfdjlaskjfdlkasjflk;asjflkjalkjflkasjfs /endrant.

    • Hi Carlo 🙂 Thanks for dropping by and leaving a comment! If they say max of how many Mbps, it’s very rare that the speed ever reaches it. If you’re on prepaid, it’s usually slower than postpaid, based on my experience lang.

There are many factors, but mostly it’s signal strength and how many people are using Smart mobile internet in your area.

  15. Hi Barat Queen! I’m recently searching for pocket wifi’s with good connection sa area namin and then I found your blog.

Can you suggest which one is better in our area? (Pandacan, Manila. Smart or Globe pocket wifi?)

Nag ask na din ako sa ka officemate ko which is using globe pocket wifi, okay naman daw sa area nila at maski sa province nila okay. Sa tingin mo, sa area namin, ano kaya mas okay? I’m currently using Smart Prepaid and by my experience, minsan okay ang net, minsan hindi lalo na kapag medyo masama ang panahon. Sa globe naman, na try ko lang sa broadband since yun talaga gamit ko eversince pero pag sa area na namin, need ko pa near sa window para lang makakuha ng 3G or HSPA+ signal using the globe broadband and based din sa exp ko using glob prepaid, ganun din sya thou mas malapit dapat sa window yung broadband. Hope you can answer me 🙂 thank you!

    • Hi Mica,

Thanks for visiting and thank you for your comment 🙂 But I can’t decide for you kung alin yung mas okay sa area mo. It’s good that you tried both Smart & Globe. Now that you know both their strengths & weaknesses, you have to choose based on your experience using them. Alin ang mas okay ang connection?

For all mobile internet gadgets, it’s really better to have it near a window to get the best signal with least obstructions. Just pick the one with the best connection in your house. If, after some time, you are not happy with the service, it’s easy to unlock the pocket wifi and use the other telco naman 🙂 Good luck!

    • Hi Ching, thanks for your comments! Good luck!

  18. thank you for sharing… your post help me and gives me idea on how to choose a pocket wifi. thank you for explaining the difference between mbps and mbs. I learned a lot from your post.

  19. Hi! Thanks for this very informative article!

Actually, I don’t know kung anong question ba ang magegenerate ko dito, pero do you think Globe is reliable enough sa prepaid unlimited surfing? Kahit na may terms and conditions?

And what about Smart? May ganito din ba silang terms and conditions applied?

    Thanks! 🙂

    • Hi Kim, parehas silang may Fair Use Policy. Globe I think is 800MB per day, while Smart is 1.5GB per month. However, balita ko mas strict ang Globe mag implement ng FUP, mas marami akong nakikitang complaints about Globe’s FUP.

In my experience, mas okay ang Smart mobile internet, mas mabilis, but that is for me and depends on where I usually go and my location. For some people, mas okay ang Globe based on their location and where they usually go. It really depends on you and your habits, so I always recommend to try it out first, kahit yung 1 day internet lang, para ma test mo.

With all that being said, I can’t find any unli internet offers on Globe’s website anymore.

  20. Hi!

Thank you for your blog. I find it very informative. But would like to ask straight from you these questions. Since my nature of work is online, I am planning to buy a pocket wifi para atleast wherever I go, madadala ko siya. Now, since medyo limited yung bydget ko, ask ko lang if okay na baya yung signal strength nang isang 4G prepaid pocket wifi especially sa online work where I do mostly internet research. 🙂 Thank you!

    • Hello Mayang, thanks for your comment! Yes, if budget is an issue, a 4G pocket wifi is okay na in terms of speed. It can reach up to 12 Mbps or 21 Mbps. Ang DSL ko nga 3 Mbps lang 🙂

The problem is not your pocket wifi. The speed you get will be limited by the service speed of Globe & Smart. Kahit ano ang ganda ng pocket wifi mo, if the service/signal provided is weak, or if congested yung cellsite/network, mabagal pa din ang makukuha mong internet.

      Hope that helps 🙂

  21. Hello Barat Queen,

You’re blog is so very informative. 🙂 So happy I stumbled on your blog. 🙂 Anyway, I do have a question I have a old model of smart bro pocket wifi 3g which is huawei E586. Already done with my plan and cut it already. Such a relief. 🙂 Thinking on going prepaid instead on my device. What will I buy a regular normal smart sim or a broadband smart sim? LTE 4G sim is not compatible right? 🙂 and how can i register on the promos and which promos is the best for you when it comes to prepaid.

    Thank you 🙂 God bless.

    • Hi Mariel, thank you for your kind words! Personally I go for the regular call & text SIMs. I tried getting a Smart Broadband sim before and encountered problems like buying load for it. Special SIM kasi siya so I needed to find load na pang Smart Broadband sim lang. I don’t know if they were already able to fix that problem already since this was a few years ago.

Also, iba yung mga promos & offers sa Smart Bro SIM vs yung mga promos & offers for regular sim. For less headache, I just go for the regular sim.

When you want to register to a promo, you need to take the sim out of the pocket wifi, insert it into a phone, register using the phone, then put the sim back inside the pocket wifi. It’s kind of a hassle. There are also ways to do this online using Smart’s mySmart website, I think. And you can also do it via phone (similar to a pasaload type transaction). But personally, I do it the old way (taking the SIM out) because I want to make sure it’s done properly. I want to read the confirmation messages. If done via texting (like pasaload), I’m afraid I might type the wrong numbers and reload to the wrong SIM!

      • Noted Queen 🙂 Thanks for the response will try the manual thing insteas mas safe. 🙂 Godbless!

    • Hello gig gig, thank you for your nice comments!

    • Meron.. 800MB per day on Globe. Smart I think is 1.5GB per month (but di naman daw strict sabi sabi ng iba).

  23. hi there Ms Barat Queen,
good day! i like your tips, ideas, suggestions… i’ve read your other topics too..
i live here in angeles city and yesterday i went in sm clark to buy an lte pocket wifi, (we’ll use it for live streaming in our church) after looking around and after a lot of queries from tech stores i found 1 store (pc express) who sells an lte modem (huawei and tplink) costing about P4450 and P4000 resp. but their sales person told me that this modem is only suitable for gadgets not on laptops so i politely walked away and went to smart office nearby and they also have a huawei pocket wifi which costs P1499 and an lte wifi with a promo price of P3495, anyway i took a timeout and surfed for more suggestions and i came across your site so i went back to my ofc to think further i really need a modem with a min. speed of 5mbps and reliable for our live streaming is really important and we don’t want any interference of some kind…

thanks and keep up the good work!

    • Hello edwin, thank you for sharing 🙂

Actually, in terms of technical specs, both the 3G/4G modem and the LTE modem are already faster than what you need. If you only need 5Mbps speed, the P1495 priced pocket wifi (max of 12Mbps or 21 Mbps, not sure kasi unclear yung specs nila) and the P3,495 LTE pocket wifi (max of 42 Mbps) both meet your needs.

Hindi yung pocket wifi ang may problema kung mabagal yung internet, yung mobile internet signal (for lack of a better term) ng telco ang may problema. Think of it this way, if you are in a remote area and get delayed messages, dropped calls, network busy or can’t send a message from your phone, it’s usually a signal/telco problem diba, and not the fault of your phone. Ganun lang din sa pocket wifi. Yung pocket wifi is just like your phone, taga receive lang siya ng signal. 🙂

Any of these pocket wifis you are choosing from will meet your needs. What you need to focus on instead is which telco has a better service/internet signal in your area. Hopefully hindi din congested yung area. Even if you buy the expensive LTE pocket wifi, e kung panget naman yung internet signal sa area mo, mabagal din. Hope that helps 🙂

  24. Hi Barat Queen,

Finally I found a blog where everything is clear. I have read all your post and comments about getting a pocket wifi and THANK YOU for posting it. Now I am thinking whether I’ll go to non telco pocket wifi o itatry ko muna yung sa Sun kasi malakas daw yung signal samin (sabi ng friend/kapit-bahay ko). What do you is much better?

    Area: UP Diliman

    Thank you again Dear! 🙂

    • Hi Mhai, thanks for reading! 🙂 In the end, it’s your choice. It really depends on what you will use the internet for.

For me, personally, I don’t like being limited to only doing light browsing when I’m online, and I don’t like having to worry that doing this or that internet activity is not included in my plan. Nakakainis kasi when it’s urgent and I need to download something tapos di pala puwede sa plan, so extra bayad pa P5 for 15 minutes. So I am using Big Bytes 299 for 1.7GB internet (all activities included) for 30 days when I am out of the house (with free 1.1GB of iflix or Fox!).

It really depends on your needs. Anyway, check with Sun if their unli promos are still available, because as of a few days ago, Smart prepaid still has unlisurf 🙂

Thanks in advance! ?

    • Hi Shel, mas mabilis maubos battery ng phone pag doon ka mag 4G, if heavy use, sometimes 1%-2% bawas sa battery per minute. If your phone is using wifi, it uses less power, mas matagal ang battery. Also, a pocket wifi is really designed to do what it does.

Anyway, this is not confirmed, but just my opinion – mas mabilis malaspag ang phone especially if you turn it into a wifi hotspot – the phone gets really hot. I only do this pag no choice. Paminsan-minsan okay lang, but not when you do it all the time.

With a pocket wifi – your phone battery will last longer through the day, and you can also let other people share your wifi, AND you can move the pocket wifi where there is better signal – for example, you can just put the pocket wifi near the window while you move around; if you are using your phone, it means you will have to stay near the window the whole time.

Thanks in advance! ?

  27. Hello. Thank you for this guide.

Im just having this dilemma on which pocket wifi device to get.

Smart offers an LTE Mobile wifi and a 4G Mobile wifi…

With approximately Php 1k difference, with the latter being cheaper.

    Which one to get?

We will be using it for both light/casual browsing and heavy usage (gaming – Hopefully low ping on servers) and youtube =D (Who doesn’t love youtube? :))

    • Hi Richard, thanks for your comment 🙂

The LTE one is better just because it can give you a faster speed, AND it is backwards compatible to 3G/4G. However, everything is still dependent on whether LTE coverage is available in your area, the quality of the signal you get in your area, and the promos you might want to avail yourself of. At the moment, the prepaid packages for LTE are limited to a few choices, while the regular 3G/4G has more promo options. Since fewer people have LTE gadgets, LTE tends to be less congested.

      Good luck! 🙂

      • Hello. Thanks for your reply.

Im looking at the postpaid plans of smart actually… My friend uses an LTE mobile wifi at the 2nd floor and its really really fast… Im planning on using it on the 10th floor of the same building, i will probably ask him to go there and try the connection prior to purchasing one..

What can you say about the SMART POSTPAID Unli-Surf 999 (Casual surfing + 4.5gb Heavy Usage)?

        Thank you!

        • Hi Richard 🙂 If you are going to buy an LTE pocket wifi, subscribe to the LTE 995 nalang to get the max speed. As for going postpaid, that is your choice. If you can find a plan that does not have a very long lock-in period, that’s best. You want to avoid being locked into a plan for a long time just in case they suddenly start imposing data caps 🙂

So far, I’ve heard good things about Smart’s Unlisurf – some people have been commenting (check the other posts) that it’s fast and they generally don’t encounter data caps, for now.

  28. Hi ms. BQ…

    • Hi Jay,

Malakas gumamit ng data ang Skype. With that being said, I don’t think it’s a pocket wifi problem but more of a signal/network problem if you’re having trouble connecting to Skype. If the internet that it receives is crappy, your phone will also get crappy internet.

If you have a 4G capable phone, I suggest trying out your preferred network – subscribe to a 1 day mobile internet promo and try to use skype on your phone. If Skype works well, most likely it will work well with your pocket wifi too 🙂 The only problem you might encounter with your pocket wifi (very small chance, though) is that your pocket wifi might be defective (mahina makasagap ng signal).

If you really want to be sure, you can borrow a friend’s pocket wifi and test to see how Skype works in your area and with your network before making the plunge and buying a pocket wifi 🙂

      Good luck! 🙂

  29. Hi, Barat Queen! I really love this article, thank you very much! And congrats on the viewership it gets. 🙂

I agree with your advice on using an unlocked pocket wifi. I have a pocket wifi and two sims (Globe and Smart) which is really convenient since I travel a lot. This way, you will know which signal works on a certain area.

But I must say, Huawei E5330 really sucks. May I know kung ano ang model mo ng pocket wifi and brand? 🙂

Salamat ulit dito! I loved the part where you explained MB and Mbps. 🙂

    • Hello Maya,

Thank you very much for your kind words 🙂 I am using a Huawei 5330 bought from Lazada during one of their sales. I considered getting the Alcatel one from Smart but I read from others that it hangs, and I think the Alcatel is LTE-capable, while the 5330 is only up to 21 Mbps, that’s why the Alcatel is probably faster.

Anyway, my experience with the 5330 is average – there are times when I can’t seem to get anything on the internet, and I need to turn off/turn on my 5330 to get my internet working properly again. Other than that, it’s okay – battery life lasts a long time – sometimes up to 8 hours with average use (instagram-heavy, but no heavy downloading) on a full charge.

  30. hi ms barat

thanks for this very informative blog of yours

    ok ba to?

  31. i mean prng additional 500 lng if lumagpas ako sa 5 gig, kaya suggestion pa sakin e sagarin ko nadaw..mgtaka daw ako if lumagpas ng 1.5k ang bill ko.

    • Hi Jo, thank you for your kind words 🙂

I think the P1,500 max is the anti-bill shock feature. Ok eto as long as they won’t slow down your internet connection if you use a lot 🙂

If this is not your main internet connection for your home, 5GB per month is a lot for personal use on the go. However, if it is your main connection at home for the whole family, kulang yung 5GB. If you watch a lot of YouTube or download a lot (torrents, games, use other streaming services, do Skype video, etc..) isang araw lang ubos na ang 5GB.

If your internet continues being fast for the whole month, that’s great! 🙂

  32. Hi! I happen to read your post and I have a question. I have an LTE capable open line pocket wifi and smart bro LTE capable prepaid. I’m thinking of registering it to LTE promos without the hassle of getting the sim card out and transferring it to a phone. Is it possible? Thank you!

    • Hello Portia, yes it’s possible 🙂 you can use one of the Smart apps (although read the reviews on the Google Play store first), you can also register via https://my.smart.com.ph, and I think you can also register via text.

You can also connect your pocket wifi to your laptop, connect to the router web page, log in (get the default username password from the manual) and you should be able to access an SMS or Message area where you can read texts to and from your pocket wifi. You can send texts using that interface.

      Hope that helps 🙂

    • Hi chi, thank you for your comment! So happy that you found this post helpful 🙂

There are several types of internet promos available – by the Hour, by the Byte, and Unli, by the app. I have a post that talks about them: http://www.karenmnl.com/how-to-choose-the-best-mobile-internet-by-the-byte-by-the-hour-by-the-app-unlimited/

It depends on which promo you register to. Each type has its advantages and disadvantages.

I feel like they are trying to encourage everyone to start registering to the per MB plans, yun kasi ang pinupush lagi. Although meron pa ding konting offers na per day, per week, per month, unli. I think Sun nalang ang may per hour na internet.

As for how they measure how much MBs are used: we have no choice but to use their count. You can check your own internet usage counter on your phone or downloads some apps to do that, but in the end, the one measured by the telcos is still the one that is going to be followed.

If you feel like mabilis maubos yung MBs mo, try checking your background data. You might have some apps running that are downloading updates, etc… here’s a little bit more about how to restrict background data: http://www.greenbot.com/article/2090128/11-killer-android-features-you-aren-t-using-but-should.html?page=2

  34. this is probably the most helpful article I found about choosing a pocket wifi to use. Thank you for writing this smart yet very understandable blog post. I found it really useful and helpful. I am currently deciding on getting my own pocket wifi as a backup for my home dsl in cases when there is power interruption, etc and your post is the most comprehensive one that I found in the web.

    Thank you so much!

  35. Hello po. I have postpaid pocket wifi, plan 999 sa globe po. Mag end of contact na this month. I’m planning to buy na lang prepaid LTE sim para di masyadong mahal sa monthly. Is it possible to use prepaid sim to my pocket wifi? Thanks and God bless! 🙂

    • Hi lally, yes, it’s possible — you just need to have your pocket wifi unlocked. It’s probably locked to Globe SIMS. If you use a Globe prepaid, it will work. But if you want to use a Smart SIM, kailangan mo pa unlock.

You can have it unlocked sa Greenhills or kung saan maraming telco shops for a few hundred pesos. Bring your new, working SIM card (subscribed to a 1-day internet promo, preferably) and test it after unlocking – make sure your unlocked pocket wifi is able to connect to the internet. Huwag kang aalis dun sa nag unlock hanggang hindi napapagana yung pocket wifi with your new SIM 🙂

It’s not only the signal – usually kasi ipapakita niya sayo nung technician na Green na yung signal. Sometimes you have to create a profile for Smart kung hindi automatic na ginagawa ng pocket wifi mo yun. If you are techie baka kaya mo gawin on your own. If you are not techie, sa kanya mo na pagawa. So don’t leave until you are able to connect to the internet using your pocket wifi and new sim (for example, you can connect your phone to the pocket wifi and surf the net).

      Hope that helps 🙂

  36. I like you Barat queen. These posts that you share and work hard for are really helpful, even to the fact that you explained the difference between MB and Mbps. I, as an IT graduate student understands and appreciate your day to day tech research, hehe. I can say that I’m a moderate user when it comes to 3G, 4G/ LTE plans since I’m currently subscribed to PLDT’s myDSL plan. Well, I too am having issues with PLDT and that the reason why I prefer Smart over Globe, is, well.. their service, I mean the product features that they offer of course. For some, Smart can be nasty sometimes even Globe. It really does end on the user’s perspective to what they want to use it for. Nothing else. But of course, perspective is perspective. I agree with your ideas and that for me, I’ll go with Smart when it comes to internet features and stuff – Speed, reliability and the stability of their service.

    • Thank you for your nice comment, Naps 🙂 It always makes me happy to know that someone appreciates the things I share 🙂

  37. Good day! I just want to ask kung saan makakabili ng agad unlocked na pocket wifi, im here kasi sa Magsaysay, Pasig City but I cant decided which tel-co has stable connection so upon reading the comments it is really good if I will buy unlocked pocket wifi but where can I buy it? Hope for reply. Thanks! Godbless 🙂

  39. Hello po. almost 5months ko hindi na loadan ung pocket wifi sim ko tapos kagabi gusto kong i try kung makakapag register pa ako I buy a card which is for 3days but when i put the LOAD then the data card number and data card pin no. and then i send it 2225 pero error lagi ayaw niya mag send what should i do? bibili na lang ba ako ng new sim for my pocket wifi?

    • Hi aya, usually pag ganyan malamang inactive na yung SIM. Try mo ilagay sa cellphone and check kung may signal pa ng Smart and if nakakareceive ng call. Kung ayaw na, I think it’s inactive already. Ang alam ko, 2 months no load ata and it can be considered inactive.

    • Hi Johnny, as long as the SIM you are using can do mobile internet on your cellphone, it will work with a pocket wifi 🙂 as long as the pocket wifi is not sim-locked.

  40. Thank you for response BQ ? , my last question is which is faster? a normal 3G phone Data nor a 3G pocket wifi, I’m confuse just about it. Thank you

    • Hi johnny, there are too many factors depending on the brand of the phone and the pocket wifi, etc… Some budget phones scrimp on the components and their receivers can be very weak.

For occasional use, phone is fine. But if you are planning on heavy use, I suggest getting a pocket wifi instead since it was designed for that specific use. If you use your phone as a hotspot, I just feel like it will wear it out faster (no scientific proof to back up though, just a gut feeling since my phone gets really hot when I use it as a hotspot in emergencies). 🙂

  41. Hi. I just availed the pocket wifi plan 999 last oct 24. And I realized that I am so dumb stupid to get it eagerly and bow feels like I havent went in the net for good. Very slow. Is it possible that I can terminate the plan now? Thank you

    • Hi. I just availed the pocket wifi plan 999 last oct 24. And I realized that I am so dumb stupid to get it eagerly and bow feels like I havent went in the net for good. Very slow. Is it possible that I can terminate the plan now? Thank you

    • Hi, I don’t think you can terminate the plan without incurring some termination fees. That’s why always think twice, thrice and more before signing up for any plan with a long lock-in period. Only do it after you are sure that you will be receiving the kind of service you will be satisfied with. Otherwise, there is nothing you can do because you are under lock-in period and have to continue paying for bad service.

You can use both. The catch it will be using the lower speed. For example, if your pocket wifi is LTE and you are using a non-LTE SIM, your speed when you use them together will be using the lower one, which is the non-LTE SIM’s speed.

  43. Hi i want to share some cool and better stuff , guys try buying a second hand samsung s4 i9505 and use it as youre wifi, if youre planning to buy the 4999php model serously its way batter at everything it will last longer than most pocket wifi outhere plus its a smartphone pluss it catches signal so good . Just look it up in youtube. But still boils down to the carrier lol it ca let 10 devices connect at the sametime , plus can be used as a backup phone incase youre other one is down. Each day s4 is getting cheaper and cheaper so be wise guys. And we know korea has one of the best internets right? Haha lol

  44. hi bt! tnx 4 ur review.
just want to ask… i have globe home lte.
if i will tranfer the sim to a globe pocket wifi,
are there possibilities that it will work?

    cheers!

    • I have the same question.. After i traanfered d sim to my pocket wifi, i then changed d APN to athome.globe.com.ph but still ddnt work.. Help pls 🙁

      • Hello po, ganito din problem ko. I tried my Globe LTE home SIM to a Globe 4g pocket wifi also. changed APN several times already but it didnt work 🙁 Please help! Do i need to make it openline?

  45. Please give me an advice po.. LTE or 4G kc dalawapo cp ko ung isa aamsung not 4g and oher one is asus 4g.. pro masgusto ko gamitin ung samsung ko. Ano po dpt bilhin ko pocket wifi LTE or 4G. thank you and more powers.

    • Hi 🙂 kahit 4G or LTE walang kaso, parehong gagana sa phone mo. Your phones will connect to your pocket wifi using wifi connection, walang kinalaman ang 4G or LTE dyan 🙂

For your pocket wifi, it will connect to Smart or Globe using LTE or 4G, so that is what you have to decide (buy 4G or LTE), based on your budget and the kind of signal you are getting in your house/office. LTE is of course faster, but also more expensive, and most areas don’t have LTE signal yet, so baka sayang lang if mag LTE ka tapos wala pa palang LTE sa lugar mo.

      In short:
(samsung/asus phone) —–using wifi connects to—–> (pocket wifi) —–using 4G or LTE connects to—–> (Globe or Smart)

Basta wifi capable yung phone mo, it will be able to connect to your pocket wifi. It doesn’t matter kung 4G or LTE yung phone mo.

Pag sinabing 4G or LTE yung phone, it means it will be able to connect directly to Smart or Globe using 4G or LTE, di na dadaan sa pocket wifi. This uses up battery power faster than using wifi.

      Hope that helps 🙂

      • ask ko lang po…

i have E3220s-2 pocket wifi… then bumili ako sim card na LTE 4G… and i register to supersurf50… pero nung sinubukan ko na magconnect (gamit ang laptop) naddetect naman sya kaso nakalgay “limited” ???

        thanks

  46. tanong ko lang regarding naman sa internet loads. ano ang mas the best globe or smart.. kasi pareho lang silang consumable.. Im confused kasi bibili lang ako ng pocket wifi for skype purpose ei

    • Hi Jenny, depende talaga sa lugar niyo kasi depende sa lakas ng signal, etc… you can ask your neighbors for their experience kung alin yung mas mabilis sa lugar ninyo 🙂

    • Hello, yes, puwede 🙂 If your PC does not have wifi connection capabilities, you have to buy a USB wifi dongle, like this: http://ho.lazada.com.ph/SHESHl or this http://ho.lazada.com.ph/SHESHp. It’s not that expensive, around P500. Meron din sa cdrking but I suggest going with the branded ones.

Then just connect your desktop to your pocket wifi – the process is very similar to how you do it on your phone. In Windows, in the lower right screen near the date and time, you should see a signal bar that looks like your cellphone signal bar, that should be your desktop’s wifi icon. Just click it and you should see a list of wifi networks. Pick your globe tattoo pocket wifi’s name, then type in your passphrase to connect to your globe tattoo pocket wifi 🙂

      • hi! this process was taught to be by a friend but because I’m planning to connect my desktop using my phone’s hotspot. He told me that if I use a pocket wifi daw, I can just use a USB connector and connect it directly to my desktop. Is this true? Because I’m planning to choose only one between a wifi receiver device ot a pocket wifi. TIA for ur reply ^-^

        • I’m sorry for the spam. Let me just correct my errors ^-^v

        • Hi Jamie, yes you can connect your pocket wifi to your desktop via USB. Your pocket wifi should come with a short USB connector (mine did). You can use that to connect your pocket wifi to your desktop / laptop.

However, I don’t really recommend doing that because it will be more difficult for you to move your pocket wifi. Knowing our telcos’ signal issues, you will sometimes need to move your pocket wifi to the “best spot” to get better signal, usually near a window. If your pocket wifi is hooked up to your desktop, it would be difficult to do that and will make your setup “not flexible” in case you encounter any signal issues.

  48. I have a smart bro pocket wifi plan 899 2.5gb consumable only. If i reaches above that given GB does that mean i will pay 1499? Just like sa globe?

  49. hello barat queen. this is the longest thread of blog i have ever seen. maybe you should branch out to tech blogs. you are the best in seeking the cheapest/affordable budget friendly deals out there.kudos to your great work.

    • Hello diego, thank you for your kind comment! 🙂 I’d love to start a tech blog. Tech is a hobby of mine, but I don’t have the spare cash to buy all the new gadgets and review them, haha 🙂 I do what I can though. I also don’t have that much time to maintain another blog! So I just have everything here – all my interests in one blog, organized by post topic (Foodie Discoveries, Tech & Mobile Life, Sales, etc).

  50. Hi Barat Queen!

I must say, really awesome blog – it’s not often that I come across a really useful article, and through search engines at that! Ibig sabihin type ka ni Google.haha. Super helpful article because my work is almost entirely done online and I’m looking for a reliable internet connection. I’ve a few clarifications though, if you don’t mind:

    1. I decided to buy a 4G pocket wifi based on your recommendations. Do you know if MOA and the surrounding areas are LTE or 4G enabled?

    2. What pocket WiFi would you recommend/are you using right now?

    3. Do you have experience with Chromebooks? I’m exploring this option right now.

    Cheers!

    • Hello Yeshua, thanks for your comment! 🙂

      1. I don’t know if MOA is LTE-enabled, but my guess is yes, but just MOA or nearby, most likely.

      2. I am using a Huawei 5330, which I talked about here: http://www.karenmnl.com/its-a-good-time-to-buy-unlocked-pocket-wifis/ I bought it a few months after I wrote that post, waited for Mastercard Monday 🙂

      3. What will you be using the Chromebooks for? It really depends on what you need it for. Personally, I am not sold on Chromebooks because they have a lot of limitations. We are so used to running Windows that if we were limited to only using Chrome apps, it might be a problem. Also, I like a full-sized keyboard, so it’s at least a 13-inch laptop for me, preferably 14. Typing on tiny keyboards suck productivity. Seriously. Also, check how much hard drive capacity your chromebook will have. 32 GB just won’t cut it. If your 16GB smartphone capacity is always getting full, imagine how much more you will need for a laptop. For laptops, the basic needs are the OS (Windows), some sort of MS Office type suite, anti-virus, cloud storage app, etc… Just the Windows OS and MS Office, and that 32 GB is gone.

If budget is an issue, you can get the budget laptops like Dell 3451 or Lenovo G4030 for 10-13k (wait for sales). Their batteries are removable, meaning you can buy replacements when the battery dies. I also like to remove my laptop battery when using it at home while plugged. Their RAM is also upgradable – meaning when budget allows, you can increase the RAM for faster performance. Yes, of course, they are slow compared to the 30k laptops, but I think they are better options than Chromebooks at this price range. They are only slow to open programs, but once the programs are open, they are very responsive when it comes to typing, etc… I have the Lenovo G4030 – it has a DVD drive while the Dell doesn’t.

      • Thanks for answers one and two. I will be checking that pocket wifi.

Regarding Chromebooks, I’m actually looking for something that’s super light – as light as possible – that I can carry every day and can run basic office stuff like MS excel and word as well as some apps like Long Tail Pro and maybe access a VPS without lag. I found an Acer Chromebook that’s 11-inches wide (if I remember correctly) and only weighs 1.3kg, but yeah the limitations are there. I’ll check out those laptop models you mentioned and decide from there. Again, thank you very much and tunay kang barat.haha

        • Haha 🙂 I’m actually using an i3 asus laptop with 8gb of ram as my main laptop, but the battery’s busted. I just bought the budget Lenovo so that I could have something to take with me when I go out of town or when I want to work outside, without having to disentangle my main laptop from all the wires connected to it.

I was considering Chromebooks and all the other smaller laptops, but most of them have non-removable batteries, non-upgradable RAM and only 32 GB of storage and those are just not going to work for me. Hindi sulit. So I ended up with a 14-incher instead. For me, I would rather lug around a bigger laptop than have to live with all those disadvantages that would make the laptop practically useless. Granted, I don’t take it with me everyday, only on occasion. It could be different for you, though. FYI, Chrome uses up a lot of RAM so you will definitely need to get more than 2GB if you usually open a lot of Chrome tabs. 32GB talaga is not acceptable for me kasi OS palang, then adding Office, ubos na siya. Paano na other programs and data pa. Also, I don’t think you can install the real MS Office on Chromebooks but have to use Office Web Apps or the Google Apps lang. Too much hassle. Too much workaround for me. I’d rather spend a little more for a “real” laptop.

  51. I have a Huawei E5372 LTE modem (pocket wifi), using SmartBro prepaid, which is connected to my house’s wired local area network. It’s simple to do. The modem is attached (and charged) via USB to my Windows 7 PC, which has an Ethernet NIC. The PC’s gigabyte NIC is connected to a CD-R King gigabyte switch. My other computers (Mac Mini, Windows 10 PC, Intel NUC PC, D-Link NAS, several Raspberry Pi versions, plus my BluRay DVD player and LG HD 3D TV) are attached to the switch.

On the Windows 7 PC, right click on the Internet icon in the system tray. Select Open Network and Sharing Center. From that menu click on Change Adapter Settings at the left. Right click on the Huawei Modem and select properties. Click on the Sharing tab, and allow other computers to connect to the network through the Huawei modem. This will then automatically set up the NIC in the PC as both a bridge from the LAN to the modem (192.168.8.1), plus the PC acts as a DHCP server to all the LAN devices, in the range 192.168.123.xxx

Of course, you can still connect devices to the modem (like my iPad mini & Android phone, plus visitors’ gadgets) via wifi, and get an IP address of 192.168.8.xxx

The first time you set this sharing up, you might have to give the PC permission to allow the connection, but usually never have to do that again.

Sometimes the wired LAN gets lost, like when you power down the Huawei modem, or there is a brownout. Sometimes the LAN gets restored after power comes back on, but, if not, then do all the stuff in the second paragraph above, but turn off sharing under the Huawei setting, then turn sharing back on again.

    • Hi BQ! Thanks for this info about pocket wifi’s. Just to add, if you are using a Sun Pocket Wifi 3G or the new LTE for Sun, nakiki ride ka lang sa 3G or LTE coverage ng Smart. So if Smart signal is weak at your area, most probably mahina rin ang signal ng Sun. But there is a way para hindi Smart signal ang marecieve na signal ng Sun Pocket wifi mo, all you have to do is change the preferred network type to 2G or EDGE kasi originally yun lang ang prinoprovide ni Sun. And you can also switch your APN settings sa Dashboard ng Pocket Wifi mo (fbband, minternet, etc) itest mo nalang which is faster pero it may change results from time to time.

  52. Hi Good day po Ms. BQ, ask ko lang po yung binebenta ba sa Lazada na Huawei E5330 is unlocked na ba? Or do I still need pumunta sa GH or any techie centers to unlock the pocket wi-fi?

    • It’s unlocked 🙂 No need to go to Greenhills to have it unlocked. Ang mga naka lock lang na pocket wifis are those that are sold na may Smart, Globe or Sun brand mismo sa box.

Kapag Huawei lang yung box, it’s not locked, puwede mo gamitin kahit aling SIM, kahit abroad 🙂 Eto yung original (untampered) version, meaning not customized and not locked for Smart, Globe or Sun. I’m not sure kasi if Smart, Globe or Sun do anything else to change the unit aside from locking it to their telco.

For example, sa box ng Smart Pocket Wifi (Huawei 5330 b), it says speed of 7.2 Mbps. But from Huawei’s website, the 5330 has a max speed of 21.6 Mbps. That’s why I chose to get the orig Huawei nalang kahit mas mahal ng konti.

  53. Hi Good day po Ms. BQ, ask ko lang po yung binebenta ba sa Lazada na Huawei E5330 is unlocked na ba? Or do I still need pumunta sa GH or any techie centers to unlock the pocket wi-fi? Thanks.

  54. Q> I use Iphone4(non lte), use it directly to connect to the internet.

if I use 4G or LTE pocket wifi,(assuming globe LTE sim), will the browsing speed in my iphone4 also increase?

    • Hello 🙂 If your pocket wifi is an LTE one, using an LTE SIM, and in an LTE-covered area, then yes, it will definitely be faster. If you will be using a non-LTE pocket wifi, the speed will be the same.

  55. hey BQ! thanks sa mga pointers nabinibigay mo samin. bumili kasi ako ng pocket wifi sa sun cellular yung 450 per month and tinanong ko yung teller if pwede yung prepaid sim dun. baka kasi magka lapses ako sa payment tapos mawala. baka pwede ko na lang gawing prepaid yun kao nga daw di pwede. is that true po? di ko ba pwede palitan yung sim sa modem then mag prepaid na lang?
thanks BQ sana mapansin mo yung concern ko.

    • Just my experience – postpaid is faster 🙂 i just have a gut feeling that they somehow prioritize postpaid subscribers, but I don’t have any data to back this up… 🙂

    • It depends on your location, sim and device you use. We recommend you always use an LTE sim + LTE device so you could always get the max speeds your area could provide.

  57. Hi BQ,

I currently use smart’s 4G in my office since our office net is slow and often crowded. I had enjoyed smart’s 4G since Feb last year but I started experiencing bad internet connection since Jan 7, 2016. The speed is good, running at 200KBPS when I arrive at 7am in the office, until about 8:30am and then it starts crawling at 5-10 KBPS. I couldn’t even open speedtest or any news site starting 8:30. I complained to smart everyday and up to now, the same problem persists. Customer rep told me I already reached the limit, and I told every one of them that if that were the case, then I shouldn’t be able to enjoy good speed prior to 8:30. Would you know what’s the story behind this sudden drop? What actions would you recommend – switch to Globe, get Sun, get prepaid smart, etc. Office internet is unreliable and I use it to trade the market.

    • It depends on your location, sim and device you use. We recommend you always use an LTE sim + LTE device so you could always get the max speeds your area could provide.

  58. Hi BQ!

Napakasaya ko lang na nabasa ko to, prior to making a purchase for a pocket wifi. Truth be told, I am allergic to lock in periods and monthly rates. I am on a hunt for the right pocket wifi and am debating kung postpaid or hinde, kasi nirerequire kami sa trabaho to be connected at all times. Now I know what the answer is, thank you ng sobra.

One last question though, among your suggestions, which one would you consider the best among the 3 prepaid pocket wifi’s? Or depende pa rin sa location? Thanks in advance, look forward to your reply.

  59. Hello, Barat Queen 🙂 Thank You So Much For The Helpful Review 🙂 Ask me lng sna, pwede rn ba yung smart prepaid 4g pocket wifi sa sony bravia? Thanks, God Bless!!!

  60. Hello po!

I’ll just po if its a good choice to use pocket wifi for home-based teaching or is it ok for online video calling? Is it better if I use a postpaid or a prepaid one? And what brand or telco can you suggest?

Your blog is very helpful for people who really need help for choosing the right gadget. Hope to see more of this po! 🙂

    • Hello Jerick, thank you for your nice comment 🙂

If it is available, the best choice is going for DSL, or if budget allows, Fibr. DSL and Fibr internet is fast, and best of all, UNLIMITED. However, if pocket wifis is the only way to go for your situation, I notice that postpaid ones get priority (this is just based on what people have told me and based on experience).

BUT, I do not recommend getting a postpaid mobile internet account because you will usually be locked in for at least 24 months, and if you are not happy with the service, you can’t easily unsubscribe. Ask both Globe & Smart if they offer a postpaid account that has no lock-in period, and try to get that instead and use it for your pocket wifi. Smart used to have a Freedom Plan which was great for this.

The problem with pocket wifi right now is that all of the Phil telcos have put limits on internet usage, 800 MB per day for prepaid and I think 1GB per day for postpaid. This is very low, especially if you will be doing a lot of video calling. That’s why I am suggesting getting a DSL line instead, if possible, because the price for DSL is P999 for 3 Mbps speed (this is what I use), the same price as getting a postpaid pocket wifi subscription; but DSL is unlimited while the pocket wifi is very limited.

If you are really limited to using a pocket wifi, you can try using several SIMS. For example, if you use Sim A and it exceeds the daily limit already, just switch to SIM B. Unfortunately, you will have to pay for the registration of both SIM A and SIM B.

Some people “bug” their sim, but try it at your own risk. I suggest buying a new SIM to do your testing on, don’t use your main sim to avoid it getting blocked or blacklisted. Good luck!

    • We do not recommend using pocket wifi or sim card dependent devices, it is best to use DSL connection for that kind of job, but if you think your area is covered by LTE speeds then you can try enrolling to Unlimited internet subscriptions.

  63. Hello and thanks for your blog. I cant seem to find an answer anywhere regarding usage life for these pocket wi fi units. I use a Globe tattoo mounted outside my house (but under cover) and it is used daily, on all day and sometimes all night for the past 6 months. Lately I notice that what I thought was net slowdown actually resolves itself when I simply powered off the device and back on after 10 seconds. Is this a sign that the device or sim is getting tired? Thanks

    • Hi Aaron,

Thank you for your comment. Yes, it could be that the connection “hangs” which happens when it is on for a long time, it could also be overheating. If it resolves itself by resetting, it shouldn’t be a problem 🙂

Just take note of when this happens. If it becomes more frequent, then it could mean your unit could be deteriorating or starting to get problems from overuse or end of life 🙂 It happens.

Are you using a battery? If it is on all the time or is being charged all the time, that could also potentially cause issues. Batteries die faster in these conditions.

  64. Hi!

I probably missed what I’m looking for in this blog post and comments, but I guess there’s a limit to downloading if using prepaid via pocket wifi? I ask because I’m studying whether to use prepaid pocket wifi (4G) or upgrade my current Skycable subscription (which sucks as expected).

    Hoping for a reply, thanks!

    • Hi dzandueta,

Yes, there is this thing called a data cap now. When the post was written last March 2015, unlimited mobile data was still being offered by the telcos. But recently, the unlimited data has been phased out and they are now only offering volume-based data packages.

A pocket wifi is more flexible because you can take it anywhere with you and you can switch SIMs if you are not happy with your current telco, but you have to live with the limited internet.

Skycable has its problems, but I think so far, it is still unlimited.

Good luck on your decision! 🙂

  65. Good pm.

May i ask a simple question.

Based on your experience, will there be a difference in PING and LATENCY between using a mobile wifi device VS the mobile hotspot from my samsung note 3 fone? Granting that they are on the same location and on the same network?

I find my note a little unstable when it comes to playing games (sudden ping increase, disconnection issues).

    Thank you.

  66. Hi! I just want to ask satingin niyo ano po mas magandang pocket wifi na model?

  68. Hi Karen! Thank you, thank you, thank you for this. My mobile data is failing me big time, and I was thinking of just getting a pocket wifi. I was doing my research and stumbled upon this! So helpful, I’ll print this out. 🙂

    • Hi there, Marielle 🙂

I’m so glad my post was able to help! You can also buy an unlocked pocket wifi. Here’s something I wrote on it: http://www.karenmnl.com/its-a-good-time-to-buy-unlocked-pocket-wifis/

I actually went ahead and bought the Huawei E5330 and it’s working out quite well. I also have a power bank so I can recharge it when the battery is running low. Just FYI that the Huawei E5330’s sim slot uses the regular-sized sim 🙂

      • Ms. BQ, I’ve read your blog and it’s very helpful to those who are non-techie users. I’ve scanned the comments to find the aswers to my question but I think no one asked it yet. 😀 You said that you’re using Huawei E5330 that is not bought from the telcos. Can I ask what sim/carrier you are using fo it? Thank you and more power.

  69. Thanks ! Ate barat 🙂 Lol . I learned more now 🙂 xoxo love ya <3 update me plss why my globe wifi is still slow ? I use SUPERSURF promo ?

  70. Dearest Barat Queen, I am really not a techie person. Though I do try to read up and research on the best gadgets to buy. I thought 4G was the same as LTE so I bought a 4G Samsung s5 mobile phone and boo hoo now I find out that LTE is faster pa pala HAHAHHA. So me and my mom need help with buying the best fastest wifi stick in the philippines! We’re thinking Smart as the provider tapos we don’t know yet which unit. Basta may LTE na word ba?

We were also gifted an alcatel wifi stick by relatives in Hong Kong. How do we unlock this? We tried going to gh but they said illegal yan maam. HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAH how do we find which stalls can do the unlocking? HUHU it’s not possible to do it at home noh?

Looking forward to yuor response. Maraming salamat po!

    • Hi Mariana 🙂

Thanks for visiting the blog! Smart is offering an LTE pocket wifi now for only P1,995. You can buy it from Lazada, here: http://bit.ly/21RPhoq.

The price has dropped significantly from the previous price, which started at around P8,000 when LTE pocket wifis first came out! 🙂

However, mobile internet speed is still very much dependent on the telco’s signal strength and service, etc…. Just because you have an LTE pocket wifi doesn’t mean you are guaranteed amazing speeds. It just gives you the potential of getting amazing speeds. A lot is still dependent on the telco’s service (or lack thereof).

I don’t think unlocking your gadget is illegal. You must have talked to the wrong people in gh 😉 You bought it (or it was given to you), you own it now. You can do whatever you want with it. That’s why Apple couldn’t insist that jailbraking iPhones is illegal. Most likely the person you talked to just didn’t know how to unlock your Alcatel because most are only familiar with unlocking Globe, Sun and Smart gadgets. When you go to Greenhills, go to the area where the tiangge is, go to the second floor where all the little cellphone stalls are. There are tables off to the side where cellphone technicians offer their services.

It’s a big place with like, 2 wings. You can ask around. Don’t go with the first technician you talk to. Be wary because they are going to try to milk you for as much as they can. Haggle!

      • Thank you so so much BQ!!!!! We already bought the unit from Lazada! EVOLUZN is a good brand ba? I’ve never heard of it (maybe cause I’m not a techie huhu). Looking forward to receive the item baka 1 week daw shipping hahaha. Thank you so much to kind souls like you who offer to share your expertise and knowledge!

We also tried to go back to greenhills following your directions. Alcatel one touch it black na egg shaped I think it’s locked for HK use only because we tried Globe and Smart sims ayaw niya mag work. hehehe

Thank you po ! More power !

    • Globe has the non-LTE and LTE pocket wifis: http://tattoo.globe.com.ph/products/mobile-wifi#tattoo

If Globe LTE is already available in your area, get the LTE pocket wifi or you can wait until the price drops. Right now, it’s still P3,495 but Smart’s LTE is already only P1,995. Sooner or later, Globe will drop the price to match Smart’s 🙂

If your area does not have LTE, just get the non-LTE pocket wifi.

Use Gosakto to subscribe to internet. I suggest you google Gotscombodd70 🙂

  72. Hi I just need information. Anong Huawei model ng 4G pocket that can connect up to 21Mbps. Madalas ko makita 12Mbps. Di pa ako nakakakita ng up to 21Mbps.

  73. Hello Barat Queen. I live in Canada and want to send money to a friend to buy a pocket wifi. I will also be sending her an iPad 2 so we can FaceTime. She lives in Davao. What pocket WiFi would you recommend? Thank you!

  74. Hi,

Thanks for the informative post. I’m going home to Cebu a few months from now and will be working there for a few weeks, so I really need a reliable prepaid pocket wifi. Are the prices you quoted good for one month? Or until data limit is reached. (prepaid prices near the end of the article).

    Thanks in advance.
    Mae

  75. Hi 🙂 thank you for this informative post, it kinda helped decide a bit but still im unsure on what to buy as a mobile wifi. Although i decided to buy a globe mobile wifi, im not sure whether the 4G or the LTE pocket wifi. Also, my phone is in a postpaid plan of globe and i have LTE specifcally only inside my room, so will an LTE mobile wifi work also there? With LTE connection? Also is 4G available anywhere not? Thanks 🙂

    • Hi Margarette 🙂 Thank you for visiting the blog! Yes, if your phone is able to receive LTE signal in your room, your LTE pocket wifi should also be able to get LTE signal.

At the moment, 4G is more widely available in Metro Manila. Areas that are covered by LTE signal are still limited, as far as I know. Mostly limited to posh areas, business districts and big malls.

  76. • Hi Jenelyn, thank you for your comment! It makes me happy to know that my blog has been able to help you 🙂 makes the effort of writing it worth it. Thank you for appreciating it.

  77. Ms. BQ, I’ve read your blog and it’s very helpful to those who are non-techie users. I’ve scanned the comments to find the aswers to my question but I think no one asked it yet. You said that you’re using Huawei E5330 that is not bought from the telcos. Can I ask what sim/carrier you are using for it? Thank you and more power! And if it’s Globe Tattoo yung bibilhin ko, anong features yung dapat kong iconsider? Thank you ulit Ms. BQ! God bless ??? Please get back to me soon.

And if it’s Globe Tattoo yung bibilhin ko, anong features yung dapat kong iconsider? I’ll be using 2 laptops, and 4 mobile devices (max). Di ko alam kong makakaya ba without slowing the internet. And if ever I use all those devices, anong promo naman po yung pwede kong gamitin without struggling turtle connection?

  79. Hi Ms. BQ! I’ve read your blog and it’s very helpful to those who are non-techie users. (Supppeeeeeeer!!) I’ve scanned the comments to find some answers to my question but I think no one asked it yet. You said that you’re using Huawei E5330 that is not bought from the telcos. Also i would like to ask some advice kung anong promo ng Globe ang magandang gamitin if I were to use those devices na hindi na ko magstrustruggle sa turtle connection and makakaconnect lahat.

Thank you ulit Ms. BQ! God bless ??? Please get back to me soon.

    • Hello Mary Christine, thank you very much for your comments! 🙂

For the Huawei e5330, I can use Smart, Globe or Sun sims on it. I just switch the sims depending on which has the better promo / signal. The set up is automatic na, but you can also go to 192.168.8.1 to check your settings.

Kaya naman ng pocket wifi (yung up to 10 devices) yung 2 laptops + 4 gadgets. The problem you need to look out for is power consumption. Since marami naka connect, mas mabilis mauubos battery ng pocket wifi. Anyway, you can always buy a replacement battery pag nasira na, several hundred pesos 🙂

If you can, buy an LTE pocket wifi nalang. Nag price drop na sila. Your internet speed will still depend on the telco. Try to find the place with the best signal 🙂 Good luck!

There are many gosakto internet promos, just search the net for the codes 🙂 just use a new prepaid sim for it, don’t use your regular sim. That way, if anything happens to your connection, just buy a new sim 🙂

  80. Hello.
I would like to ask for a piece of advice.
I would like to set-up a modest connection that my kids can use for research purposes (assignments and projects).
What I have on hand: Sony Arc phone w/ Globe SIM, iPhone 4 w/ Globe SIM, an iPad 2, and a MacBook 10.6.
What I have in mind: On weekdays, the MacBook connects to Wi-Fi for daily research use (probably 2 hours at the most). On weekends, MacBook goes to my son for watching YouTube, iPad goes to daughter for anime stuffs, Sony phone to me, and iPhone for wifey.
The million-dollar question: what should I buy if I live in San Manuel, Pangasinan? Consider me a dumb when it comes to LTE or 4G terms and please feel free to give me an honest-to-goodness analysis.
    Thank you so much!

    • Hi Reinigan, I’m not familiar with the telco situation in San Manuel. If possible though, get a wired DSL, the one with unlimited data, or Fibr if it’s available.

With the whole family using it, I don’t think any mobile internet plan (4G or LTE)) will be enough. YouTube alone + anime will eat up a lot of data already. A 10-min 720p YouTube video can easily be 100-150 MBs already. 4G or LTE plans start at 30 – 50 GB per month. Estimate your usage and compute to see if it’s going to be enough for your family. Good luck! 🙂

  81. So happy I came across his post! I’m in the market for a new pocket wifi device. I used to own a Huawei e5330 Pero na-arbor ni mama hehe. I plan to buy another one Pero mainly for traveling (mahal Kasi ang data roaming). Is it a good idea to go LTE? Is ZTE MF920w a good device? Im gunning for the Huawei and to link ones with LTE capabilities Pero mahal pa. This ZTE , I see it in most shops and it retails for around p3k. Hesitant Lang ako, I haven’t seen any reviews online. Would lov to hear what you think. Thanks barat queen!

  82. Hey quick question!

My plan is Unlimited 3G internet for 999.

I was wondering if my 3g plan would work with the latest device now?
Like will it be compatible with the LTE pocket wif devicei? cause the one i have now is one of smart’s oldest model and im planning on changing the device.

  83. Hello Ms. BQ! Thanks for the informative post. Is it possible to use the Huawei pocket wifi ng Globe promo na P888 without the battery? Or have you tried it sa pocket wifi mo? Hoping for your reply. Thank you! 🙂

    • Hi Julie, I don’t think it’s possible. I just tried it right now and while the pocket wifi is lighting up, it won’t turn on. I can’t see it when scanning for wifi.

  84. Hi Barat Queen,

Ask ko lang. I have my prepaid Suncellular pocket wifi. Which do you think more better . Naka postpaid or prepaid? or almost same lang depende talaga sa signal ng isang area. I/m confused kasi baka mas mabilis yung transfer ng data if naka postpaid rather than prepaid.

    Thanks!

I bought it as 2nd hand and don’t have idea about if 4g or not. It only shows HSPA+ lang.
Hoping for your response po :))

      Thanks po !

    • Hi 🙂 I think postpaid is definitely faster. Feeling ko lang ha. No concrete evidence to support it, just my experience and gut feelings… hahaha. 😀

But you are locked into a 12, 24, 30 month plan. If service continues to be good, then okay lang. But if service deteriorates, you won’t be able to do anything about it. Also, if they come up with some nice new promo, you can’t switch/upgrade/downgrade your plan! If you want to go postpaid, I suggest finding a SIM-only plan that doesn’t have a lock in period for the best flexibility. This way you can stop your plan any time and switch to a better plan.

We”re trying to use it for 3days already pero ndi kami mkaconnect…puro connecting lng. Hoping for your reply. Thank you 🙂

We’ve trying to use it 3days na pero connecting lng palagi.Ano po ba dapat gawin? Hoping for your reply. Thank you and God bless ??

    • Hi Marie, try going to a place with strong Globe signal, like BGC or McKinley Hill, stay outside in an open area, if possible. Try mo doon. Also, try browsing other sites like Youtube for test purposes.

Also, ask your friends who use Globe to try also.

Nabli ko po kasing 2ndhand and have no idea about it. HSPA+ lang po nakalagay. Globe tattoo po nkainsert na sim.
Hoping for your response po Miss BQ 🙂

    Thank you.

It will work sa 3G and 4G na pocket wifi, pero the best is to use it with an LTE pocket wifi.

Nagpropromo na Smart & Globe ngayon, P888 for the 4G pocket wifi, P1,995 ata for the LTE pocket wifi.

-using globe tattoo Huawei 55330 salamat in advance samakaka recommend

    • Sorry to say, wala ng legitimate mobile internet plan or promo na makakagawa niyan. Sabi ng iba meron pa daw unlisurf sa suking prepaid loader nila, but other than that, wala ng unli. 🙁

  90. Hi Barat Queen!

What can you recommend a 3rd year highschool student na gustong bumili ng pocket wifi na facebook, messenger, twitter, at instagram lang ang gagamitin? anyway, isang device lang naman ang coconnect ko sa wifi wich is an iPad. Tbh, i dont have any idea on buying a pocket wifi. Please help me!

    Xoxo, E.

    • Hi 🙂 the price has dropped already for LTE pocket wifis of Globe & Smart. It’s around P1,999 while the non LTE (4G only) prices have dropped to P888. Depends on your budget, but go for the LTE na if you can para future proof 🙂

Just pick the network na mas ok sayo. You can always have it open-lined at Greenhills if you need it to be able to use both networks 😀

  91. Good pm po. Thank you po.

  92. Hello, and thank yout for your blog. I have a big bit pocket wifi 799 plan. We have several pc’s that are not wifi compatible. My question is, is there a router or some device to get an Internet signal to these computers?

    • Yes, you can buy something called a wifi adapter or a wifi dongle. You just plug it into a USB port, do a little configuring and your PC will be wifi-capable. I think CDR-King has some, but I’d go for more reputable brands, at least a D-Link brand or higher.

Get a techie friend to help you. You might need to know what kind of network you have (ac,b,g,n) and need to find a product that is compatible.

    • Hi Sunshine, check with Smart. Looks like the internet connection issue is from their end kung wala ka namang binago sa settings. Maybe they have an internet connection problem, or your account was blocked, or you are not registered / out of load. Check muna with them. Then have their tech support assist you with checking your pocket wifi settings kung tama.

  93. Hi planning to get pocket wifi for my ps4 to play online. Do you think the pocket wifi is enough to support the internet speed i need to play?

    • It’s not the pocket wifi that limits the speed. It’s the strength and quality of the signal / connection you get from the telco. And also if the telco is setting speed limits on their customers’ connections. For example, I heard that postpaid users get more priority than prepaid…

  94. Hi, I need advise. I’m on plan 999 for a globe tattoo (sim only) tapos yung pocket wifi ko (binili rin from globe). 4G ung connection ng pocket wifi ko na Huawie. How does it work? gusto ko kasi sana mag-LTE kasi LTE ready naman ang signal ng globe sa min. Should I buy another LTE pocket wifi? and should I cut my plan if it’s not LTE and look for an LTE postpaid sim (I prefer postpaid since I’m using my internet for my online job)?

    • Hi, to get LTE, your pocket wifi must be capable of LTE, and your SIM must be LTE capable also, and you need to be in an LTE-covered area. If one of those is not LTE-capable, you won’t be getting LTE 🙂

So if you have LTE signal in your area, you need to check that your pocket wifi and your SIM are both LTE capable. If not, you need to change them to LTE ones 🙂 Good luck!

  95. Thanks for the tip Barat Queen 🙂 I’m more than happy to take your advise if I find myself in similar situation where I have no iota of a clue as to what to buy.

I only stay in the Philippines for max 2 weeks at some point in my visits back home so don’t need a postpaid. I only need prepaid for a short period of time to check on my mails and submit my tasks. So, reading your tips helped me decide on what to get.

    Thanks!

  96. This is nice Barat Queen! I’m actually planning to buy prepaid pocket wifi tonight. My friends recommended to try Smart Bro prepaid pocket wifi. But I’m a bit confused of 4G or LTE bibilhin ko. Kasi may limited edition si Smart (based sa website nila) na LTE pocket wifi for 1995. 4g is priced naman at 888. Is it worth it na ipush ko ang LTE? My locations are Makati, Marikina, Quezon City, and Batangas. Salamat ng marami!

  97. thanks for the advice I bought a smart 4g pocket wifi. The performance is good but I don’t get any Internet connection when I am in sm start Mesa is this normal forsm or is my device faulty? My sister says it is standard for sm malls. Connected Ako to wifi but it says no internet connection. Any comments would be appreciated. Ty

Salamat

    • Yes, it is sulit 🙂

As I understand it, the plan costs 499 per month, and gives you a free LTE pocket wifi already. Lock in is 12 months.

The LTE pocket wifi costs P3,495 already. For one year at 499 per month, that’s only P5,988, but you already got a free P3,495 LTE pocket wifi.

So, it is like you are only paying P2,493 (5,988 – 3,495) for the internet. Divided by 12, that’s only P207.75 per month for 6GB. That’s only P34.62 per GB!

I haven’t used Smart Bro in a long time, it was back when it still used a different load than the regular Smart SIMs, and it was so difficult to find load for smart bro. I think they already fixed that, but anyway, since this is a postpaid plan, that shouldn’t be a problem.

Ask around if people have a good experience with Smart Bro. If yes, then it is definitely a good deal!

  98. Hello Queen B 🙂 Binasa ko muna itong blog mo bago ako bumili ng pocket wifi and I was glad I came across to this gem of info and budget-wise suggestion of yours. And yes, finally po nakabili na ako, Softbank 102z ultra 4g (lte daw?) sa lazada, sale ngayon 1499 nalang. has 2800-3000mah. has Oled dislay. openline. And really fast. prepaid. It’s good coz it’s cheap para sa mga accident-prone like me na masirain sa gamit 😀 deee joke. barat din po talaga ako. Salamat. Hope you continue to share us your ideas. Keep prospering.
