Shows and Movies to See in 2016

Hello everyone, HAPPY NEW YEAR!

It’s 2016 and it took me a while to get started with the year. I am sorry I haven’t been able to update the blog in a while. Things just got really hectic during the holidays, with friends visiting, get-togethers, parties, and household obligations, like they always do every year.

Anyway, I am about to update my 2016 planner with, you guessed it, upcoming movies of 2016! I just love watching movies and TV, and I like to keep a list of what movies and shows I am interested in so they don’t fall through the cracks of our busy lives. I pencil it in (or stick a post it flag on) my calendar so I can plan a weekend at the mall around that time. And IF I would be missing watching a movie, it will be because of a conscious choice to delay watching (or not at all), and not because I forgot.

Some of these movies, I will obviously be watching on the big screen. For some, I will just wait for the DVD Release. Watching movies in theaters is expensive, ‘ya know.

It’s also a handy reference in case I find myself with a long weekend and nothing to watch. I’d go back through the list to see if there was a show that I might not have had the opportunity to see at the time.

This is my list of things I look forward to watching in 2016 – I usually like action movies, comedy, rom-coms, and watch Hollywood blockbusters by default. I generally avoid “critically-acclaimed” movies because they tend to be unbearably boring…

SHOWS AND MOVIES TO SEE IN 2016

Without further ado, here is my list of shows and movies to anticipate for 2016, with release dates!

Note: In the Philippines, movies are usually released on a Thursday, a day before US release.

JANUARY

1 – Sherlock: The Abominable Bride — This is the next installment in the BBC’s Sherlock. BBC shows are usually too slow for me, but BBC’s Sherlock is really good. They only shoot a few episodes (3) per season, so are able to maintain quality in production, editing, etc… if you love murder solving shows but haven’t seen the BBC’s Sherlock, please go and get yourself a copy of all the episodes, ASAP! Each episode is movie-quality, there’s good control of the story, and no extra fluff. With that being said, I find that this latest episode, The Abominable Bride, was not really the best, since I am not really a fan of their version of Moriarty. Now, the Moriarty from The Librarians, he looks more like a Moriarty!

8

  • The Revenant – just because it’s Leo 🙂 besides, I am a sucker for revenge stories. I also hope Leo finally, finally, gets an Oscar.
  • Extraction – Bruce Willis, Kellan Lutz (from Twilight) and Gina Carano (Rhonda Rousey, Gina Carano, doesn’t matter which one is in the movie, I love them both). It looks like Die Hard and The Expendables. I’m in 🙂

15

  • The 5th Wave – aliens invading earth
  • Ip Man 3 – Ip Man is back and this time, he’s fighting Mike Tyson!
  • Prescription Thugs – a documentary like Supersize Me, but about prescription drugs

FEBRUARY

12

  • Deadpool – this is a given
  • How to be Single – shallow chick flick, but Rebel Wilson is funny 😛
  • Zoolander 2 – I’m sure this will be as hilarious as the first Zoolander 🙂
  • Admiral – period movie about the man who saved The Netherlands when it was attacked by the English. Looks interesting. Lots of naval battles.

21 – Legends of Tomorrow first episode. Yay! I’m mostly excited about seeing White Canary kick ass. I also like Brandon Routh’s Ray Palmer. Don’t care about the other characters 😛

26

  • Gods of Egypt – kind of weird but looks interesting. It looks like those movies with the Greek gods, but this time, with Egyptian gods… stars Gerard Butler and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jamie Lannister), etc…
  • Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny – stars Michelle Yeoh and Donnie Yen. It’s a Netflix film, and I really, really hope they don’t mess it up, but the futuristic trailer music is making me really, really afraid. Just. What were they thinking using that trailer music? *cringe*

MARCH

4 – London Has Fallen – another Gerard Butler movie; terrorists destroy London and kill world leaders

4 – House of Cards Season 4 drops on Netflix – you’d think political machinations were boring, but you’d be wrong…

18 – The Divergent Series: Allegiant – I didn’t see the first two films because I thought I couldn’t take any more Hunger Games-esque movies, but if I have some spare down time, I might consider catching up

18 – Daredevil Season 2 drops on Netflix at exactly 12:01 am; I’m assuming that it’s US time, most likely EST; I’m actually more excited to see Elektra than the other characters

25

  • Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
  • My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 – it would be nice to catch up with this Greek family 🙂

APRIL

8 – The Boss – Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Bell with a slightly Martha Stewart story; they’re funny 🙂

22 – The Huntsman: Winter’s War – didn’t watch the first movie.. but might give this a shot

24 – GAME OF THRONES Season 6 starts

MAY

6 – Captain America: Civil War – of course!

20 – The Angry Birds Movie – still undecided about this, but looks mind-numbingly entertaining

27 – X-Men: Apocalypse – I certainly won’t miss this!

JUNE

3 – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows – I guess I should start catching up and watch the first movie… I was put off the first movie because I really didn’t imagine the turtles to be so ghetto. I always thought of them as sort of Italian-American because of their names and their love of pizza. But the action sequences in the trailer do look interesting…

10 – Warcraft – the trailer looks fantastic!

17 – Finding Dory – yey! time to see our favorite fish again 🙂

24 – Independence Day: Resurgence – how can I not watch this? I’m just sayin’, I have high expectations of this movie… better not disappoint me! 🙂

JULY

8 – The Secret Life of Pets – looks fun

15 – Ghostbusters – Melissa McCarthy again!

22

Ice Age: Collision Course – I watch all the Ice Age movies!

Star Trek Beyond – ditto for Star Trek! Zachary Quinto does a very good job as Spock. Way to go, Sylar!

29 – Bourne 5

AUGUST

5 – Suicide Squad – I’m a little concerned about how Jared Leto’s Joker is going to turn out though…

19 – Bad Moms – no trailer yet, but it stars Kristen Bell, Christina Applegate and Mila Kunis. The story centers on an overachieving mother with a seemingly perfect life whose stress lines are one bad day from cracking. Fed up, she joins two other overstressed mothers, leading them on a quest to liberate themselves from conventional responsibilities, which includes going on a wild un-mom-like binge of freedom, fun and self-indulgence. The course of action lands them on a collision course with the PTA Queen Bee and her blindly devoted clique of “perfect” moms. Okay, sounds fun 🙂

26 – Mechanic 2: Resurrection – Jason Statham is back! Also stars Jessica Alba. Arthur Bishop thought he had put his murderous past behind him when his most formidable foe kidnaps the love of his life. Now he is forced to travel the globe to complete three impossible assassinations, and do what he does best, make them look like accidents.

31 – The Infiltrator – Set amidst the lavish excess of the 1980’s, Infiltrator tells the story of undercover U.S. Customs agent Robert Mazur (Cranston) AKA Robert Musella, who became a pivotal player for drug lords cleaning their dirty cash. He traded on mob connections to become the confidant to scores of the international underworld, and the bankers who enabled them. Interesting 🙂

SEPTEMBER

2 – Patient Zero – another zombie movie, starring Natalie Dormer

16 – Bridget Jones’s Baby – since I’ve already watched the first two movies, might as well watch this…

23 – The Magnificent Seven – here’s hoping the remake lives up to the original…

OCTOBER

7 – Gambit – Channing Tatum as the mutant from X-Men

14 – Underworld 5 – stars Kate Beckinsale again, but no Scott Speedman this time 🙁

21 – Jack Reacher: Never Go Back – I saw the first Jack Reacher, it was okay. Not the usual high-budget Tom Cruise movies we’re used to seeing, but it was entertaining enough

28 – Inferno – another movie from a Dan Brown book, again starring Tom Hanks as Robert Langdon

NOVEMBER

4 – Doctor Strange – Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange. I read some of my dad’s old Doctor Strange comics when I was a kid, so this is close to my heart 🙂

18 – Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them – another movie from the world of Harry Potter. Starring Eddie Redmayne

23 – The Great Wall – sounds interesting. The Great Wall tells the story of an elite force making a last stand for humanity on the world’s most iconic structure. Stars Matt Damon, Pedro Pascal, Willem Dafoe, Andy Lau.

DECEMBER

16 – Rogue One: A Star Wars Story – it’s Star Wars! No way I’m going to miss this! It’s not a continuation of the main movie story line. This movie is about a group of resistance fighters on a mission to steal the Death Star plans. If you’ve ever wondered how The Resistance knew the Death Star’s weak points, this movie might answer your questions…

21 – Assassin’s Creed – this looks good! Although I don’t play, the premise of the game is very interesting to me. Genetic memory? Templars? That’s right up my alley!
