Frangos Portuguese Chicken – Affordable, Casual Good Food

Frangos Portuguese Chicken Front

Frangos is a new, casual Portuguese restaurant along Kamagong St. in Makati. This area in San Antonio Village is home to not just a few restaurants now. Frangos is located at the Buma Building, just behind New Hatchin. Parking is available out front

When I first heard about Frangos – I thought it was a typo for Franco’s, it wasn’t . Frangos actually means chickens in Portuguese. Knowing that now should give you a good idea of this restaurant’s specialty!

Here’s what the restaurant looks like inside – one of the owners, Jonathan Renato, is telling us the story of how Frangos started. They actually started selling their Portuguese-style chicken at the Legazpi Market before opening Frangos.

MENU

Their menu is simple and written on a chalkboard:

I find their prices reasonable. I mean, P30 for plain rice, P45 for fries, P80 for couscous salad? That’s in the same range as fastfood chains!  They only have one dessert – ice cream – but it’s a big scoop of MERRY MOO for only P100!

THE FOOD

We started with some appetizers first. This Roasted Pumpkin Hummus (P95) is really good, and also healthy! The roasted pumpkins give this a depth of flavor that will make you want to gobble it all up, even if you don’t normally like pumpkins. This is roasted pumpkins done right. You can request for some butter on the side if you like your hummus to be a bit buttery. However, I think that some crackers or even toasted pita bread will go better with the hummus than the accompanying soft bread.

This Chouriço with Roast Garlic Crostini is a bit pricey for an appetizer at P300 but it’s worth a try if you haven’t tried a similar dish before. The roasted garlic is so soft that you can put a garlic clove on your crostini and spread it like jam. It’s that soft that it will spread like jam. Top your garlic spread with a slice of chouriço, drizzle with some of the olive oil and eat. Yum!

Here we have the Chouriço Queijo Quesadillas (P215). The Mango Salsa is really good.

The Frangos Wings (P195) is something you should definitely try! They are a bit spicy but full of flavor. This is definitely one of the better wings I have had.

The Beef Trinchado (P250) is amazingly good. It’s like a very good beef stew, but concentrated. The beef cubes were melt-in-your-mouth, mushrooms gave it some earthiness, the flavors of the spices used were mellowed, and on top of all that, this beef and its sauce were packed with umami goodness. I love this dish! If I had to pick just one dish to eat at Frangos, this would be it.

Here’s the Porco Steak (P230). It is tender with hints of spices and citrus.

Here’s the Portuguese Seafood Rice (P450). It’s okay. I thought it was a bit bland but it seems to be on purpose, to better pair with other, more flavorful dishes.

Finally, here is the famous Frangos Chicken (P480 for one whole chicken). It is grilled in this “cage” spread like this – this method ensures that the chicken is cooked through but still maintains its juiciness. The chicken is done grilling in about 25 minutes!

The Frangos Chicken is marinated using their own recipe – they don’t use any sugar, soy sauce, or any artificial flavorings – just their secret herbs and spices. This makes Frangos Chicken a good choice for those trying to avoid sugars and processed food in their diet.

Here it is with Frangos Rice (P45), Mango Salsa and the sauces that come with the Frangos Chicken – Green Harissa, Tomato Piri Piri, and Frangos Chili Sauce:

Here’s dessert! Merry Moo Sea Salt Caramel Ice Cream (P100) – this is the first time I have ever tried Merry Moo Ice Cream, so thank you, Frangos, for introducing me to this liquid heaven. It’s really the best ice cream I have ever had, I am not exaggerating!

SUMMARY

Frangos is a good place to chill, hang out, and eat good food without breaking the bank. The famous Frangos Chicken is something you should definitely try. It’s really good.

Other dishes to try are their Roast Pumpkin Hummus, Beef Trinchado and Frangos Wings. Have the best ice cream ever for dessert!

Service is warm and prompt. Parking shouldn’t be a problem. I am so excited to go back! I have a Beef Trinchado with my name written all over it
